Bruised Produce

Thread Starter
I recently watched a program on television that was featuring a story on how much garbage we produce, specifically food. There is so much food being thrown out that there is a whole new movement called Freecycling: people go into dumpsters and find perfectly edible food to eat. Restaurants throw out lots of untouched food, and supermarkets throw out tons and tons of produce that people will not buy due to their flaws.

I am not about to start digging through trash cans but it is a concern that has been on my mind. I'm trying to do my part by buying fruits and vegetables that have bruises and flaws. It's taking a while to get adjusted to it because my instinct tells me to buy the perfect shiny apple.... but instead I'm picking up the one next to it with the little bruise and scratch. Has anyone thought about where all those poor little bruised fruits go??

The supermarket where I do a lot of my shopping packs those up in plastic and puts them on sale at a huge discount. Which is great, usually -- the price is so low, I don't mind if I have to trim off a lot. But it does lead to some strange bedfellows, say eggplant and avocado packaged together.

And I suspect that another store uses them in cooking stuff for its salad bar. But that's just a guess.

Otherwise, yeah, way too much just gets thrown out. That's why Dumpster divers can stay alive on what they find.

A couple of my local stores package it up and sell it at a great discount. I buy a good bit of things that way. That's one way I get to try new things without spending a lot on items I may not enjoy. Sometimes, I do pass it up when it's just too far gone for the price they have on it but I get really good deals that way. Yet another way, I can feed my family of four for $60-100 per week. lol

As I understand it, our nearby Whole Foods makes substantial donations to the local Food Pantry, which also gets important donations from my Rotary Club.
