Don't Know Jack About This Fruit

Our local Asian grocery has, in the canned fruit section, several brands of something called Jackfruit.

Can anyone help identify this for me? What is jackfruit? What's it taste like? How do you use it?

Appreciate any help.

Eat it straight out of the can. It's leathery, sweet, somewhat sulphurous, with a slight tang.

Largest of all the fruit trees(could grow 60 feet) Believed native to India I fruit could weigh 60 to 80 pounds. Fresh it smells like bad onions and you have to aquire tast for it. I tried it once and never again. Skin is like leather. Eating it just proves that anything is edible They tried growing them here in Florida with some success.:chef:

jackfruit is similar to breadfruit right?

treat it like a potato

make astew with it

bake it

boil it

boil it and deep fry it to make french fry style chips


look up recipes for "oil down" from either trinidad or grenada

or look up asian recipes for it

it comes from the Polynesian islands

it is used in specialties form those places, india, thailand, malaysia and also the caribbean places like jamaica, puerto rico, and trinidad.

it is a starch

said to be "a trifle like bread, trifle like potato, better than both"

People say that about Durian too but, I actually enjoy the taste and even smell of it. Strangely.

Chef, you are thinking of Durian, Jack Fruit is native to SE Asia and Thailand, comes in cans in Asian markets and its generally packed in simple syrup. It is used primarily in desserts but I have seen it in salads. It is quite sweet and syrupy and has a soft texture to it since its retorted. Goes will in a sorbet/ice.

Are you from Sri Lanka, I had a friend from there and he would eat that stuff up, personally the smell isnt nearly as bad as the taste, I could get it in my mouth but I couldnt swallow the stuff...:o

I have never eaten it canned only a fresh peice and did not like it, and it was jackfruit

Jackfruit is similar to Durian, but without so much of the smell. It is very sweet, and has a lovely slightly chewy texture. The seeds can be boiled, and the core eaten as well. haven't eaten a fresh one for 10 years, brings back memories...

I think you have forgotten Eloki. Jackfruit is not at all similiar to Durian. Durian flesh is soft, Jackfruit flesh is al dente. Durian flesh is like custard, its smell is much stronger, and the skin is a shell of thorns. There is nothing similiar to Durian. Jackfruit truly is a nice eating fruit. Bright yellow flesh and firm, sweet, slightly sulphury, slightly acid.

Hi friend... that is an excellent fruit found in southern India and grown lots in groves.. one single fruit is huge and contains lot of tasty leathery ,yellowish skin inside.. they smell excellent and they are good nutrition providers,, they can be baked, friend and dipped with hiney for eating.... :lips::lips:
