Whole Grain White bread

I had to do a double take on this. Saw a loaf of bread in a store, and bought it out of curiosity. Sara Lee Soft & Smooth (made with) Whole Grain white bread. Sheesh. It's just fluffy white bread with whole grain as a minor ingredient.

Ingredients are enriched bleached flour, water, whole grain(blah blah blah etc). Maybe people are thinking "Wow this is really healthy and it tastes almost as good as Wonder bread." It's a bad joke if you ask me.

there is a product "Ultragrain" which purports to be 'whole grain white flour'

what I've seen of it is mostly marketing hype - i.e. "....has more ......" - no data, no facts, "more" can mean many things . . .

The marketing guru's have already figured out that most people will fall for the buzz words for two reasons.

1.) Most people won't read the ingredients label.

2.) Most people these days are really quite naive about food in its most basic forms.

You'll note that the cereal "Froot Loops" would contain real fruit if instead it were spelled "Fruit Loops".

Yey, healthy styrofoam! Oh who am I to judge, I can't get over my love of white bread sandwiches but I sure as heck am trying my friends.

Actually, I wouldn't say people are naive about basic forms of food, they are naive of marketing ploys and rush to what they WANT to believe is the truth.

Whole Grain White Flour

There really is a whole grain white flour that is made from hard white wheat. Its color is actually a little off white, but it looks light enough to fool kids who won't touch a brown bread with a ten foot jelly knife. It has more or less the same nutritional profile found in traditional whole wheat flour (made from red wheat) with a somewhat milder taste. Several companies are using it to make either a 100% whole wheat bread or a "whole grain" bread containing some regular white flour. For home baking you can buy it from the folks at King Arthur Flour.
