Making Coconut Topping 'stick'?

Hi, I am making cupcakes with a buttercream domed topping covered in thread coconut (the thick long strands not to be confused with dessicated coconut which is the fine stuff) and am having problems making a sufficient amount 'stick' to the buttercream. A few strands stick, but most just fall off and this doesn't look very good.

Would anybody have any suggestions on how to make the coconut stick properly? And ideally stick to itself so I can get a good heap of it on there? A solution of runny glace icing was my first thought but i am yet to try it and not sure if it would work...

Thanks and I look forward to hearing any bright ideas!

I have used a watery simple syrup spray (just melting some sugar in a pan of water and filling a spray bottle with it) to lightly spray the coconut for added adhesiveness, but without affecting the flavor. I hope that it works for you!

thanks, I actually did them yesterday and used a thin solution as you say. It worked quite well! A little labour intensive but worth it :)
