the lowly but real doughnut

This is a strange request in a forum for "restaurant dining" - but where else am I going to put it.
I remember once, long, long ago, there were doughnut shops or bakeries that made real doughnuts. Not the chains that make donuts, mind you, but the real thing, with real ingredients measured and mixed in the store itself, a recipe, and not a mix.
I'll be back in Boston (without a car) for the month of may. I would really like to try a real doughnut again, raised or non raised (baking powder), dunked into a real cup of american coffee (not ersatz espresso, not caffe latte).
Does anybody out there know a place where i can find this in boston? I'll be in Medford and near Attleborough too, and maybe i can persuade my hosts to take me somewhere by car but not that far. Boston (or on the subway lines around there) would be great.
I've made them myself, but the problem is you can't keep doughnuts, they're good fresh, and found myself working my way though an entire batch.
Thanks

Boston Doughnut Shop

I just got hit with a pang of homesickness because of this post!
There use to be a place on Tremont in Roxbury that had been there forever. The place was called Mike's Doughnut Shop. Whenever my parents took us into Boston we'd stop there. Later, I took my boys there when they were young. I must have been around six or seven when my parents started taking us there and am now 53 so who knows if it still is around or if they are, if it's still a doughnut shop.

For a period i used to LIVE on tremont street, not far from roxbury, and i will be staying near there - i don;t have much hope, the city having been razed by yuppies for so many decades, but i'll look for it.
thanks
anyone know anyplace more certain?
