How do I sweeten yeast donuts?

I've tried several yeast donut recipes but they don't seem to be sweet like I would have imagined. The actually taste a bit salty. More of something you'd eat as an appetizer rather than desert. I've tried adding more sugar to the recipe but that didn't help for some reason. From what I get is the sugar is what feeds the yeast so it's not what sweetens the dough? What is the process of sweetening yeast dough so it tastes sweet after frying?

A plain donut won't be very sweet on its own. The sweetness comes from the various fillings, toppings and glazes used on them.

If you notice todays commercial donuts corn syrup is added to liquid. Also a dusting of 10x sugar when they are cool will help.

Not really. The sugar gooses the yeast reproductive and metabolic cycles, but yeast can only metabolize so much sugar in a given time period. Furthermore, the time period is shortened because the sugar makes the yeast more active.

Add enough sugar, and it will taste sweet. You might want to try mixing up your sweeteners by adding some honey as well as sugar to the dough. Honey gives a nice, sweet bottom -- molasses as well.

However, as everyone else has said yeast raised donuts are better sweetned on the top than on the inside.
