Question about Greek Honey

Hi everyone,

I fell in love with Greek yogurt and honey last summer when I visited Greece. I have found Fage yogurt and other Greek yogurts in my local store (Fage is my favorite), but I haven't found a similar honey. Does anyone know a brand or type of honey that is especially good and that I may be able to find somewhere to buy in the US? I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

I'm sorry, I don't live in the USA - but some Greek honey is known as Hymettus. Perhaps if you look for that name? I have to be honest and say that when I visit any of the Greek islands, I buy the local stuff - which comes in all sorts of odd containers with no labels! The last stuff we bought was at the top of the mountain in Corfu, made by an old man who spoke no English, but the flavour was amazing - or so said my husband (have to admit, I don't like honey!)

I don't know where you are located but if there are any greek specialty stores in your area I would check there. Granted, even the honey at those stores is not as good as the odd jars with no labels found in local shops in greece but it's a start. Honey from bees who eat thyme is generally the favorite in greece.

Ishbel is right- the premiere Greek honey is reputed to be that made by the bees on Mount Hymettus. It may be available in high-end specialty stores, and it will cost you dearly. It is delicious.

You can approximate Greek yogurt like Fagus (it is now made in the US, and is still relatively expensive) by lining a large sieve with a paper towel, putting in regular yogurt, setting it over a bowl in the fridge, and letting the whey drain out overnight. Don't buy any yogurt that contains gelatin.

On the other hand, Trader Joe's offers a very nice, thick Greek-style yogurt at a reasonable price.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I did check out the yogurt brands when I was in Greece and found them here but I didn't think about checking the honey (I actually should have bought some and I'll know better next time). Your replies were helpful.
