Making meals creative and exciting for kids

hello all!

i've come across this post on a catering forum in the UK in relation to kids meals which i thought was interesting.

Basically some guy called Mark is designing funky looking lunches for his children and then showing his creative work to the world. To be honest they look pretty impressive and i really want to have a go at some myself. It's just that i dont have any good ideas yet

the post is kind of asking for some ideas for what people would create out of food to disguise certain foods kids may not eat if just presented normally.

has anyone got any thoughts on what i could try/ has anyone done any themselves? i think its a good idea and you could prob get quite creative.

the rest of the article is here

john.

Bleh, snazzy, kid resort stuff, no real substance. It's like bicycles. Kids love shiny bikes but it really comes down to the kid if they're gonna ride without training wheels.

i know this guy is probably thinking he can use brands and it does look fairly tacky etc but i just though it was an idea that could be refined to at least make certain foods more attractive and inviting to eat.

i take the point though that someone else mentioned about if you get too far down the creative route then kids may literally play with their new toy rather than eating it.

Japanese chefs have already taken this to a whole new level :lips:

I'm impressed. The Kyaraben lunch boxes are fabulous.

I think James's art work may impress very small children, or kids brought up on Dairylea lunchables.
Maybe getting kids to do something similar themselves might encourage them to try different foods. They do seem to enjoy food more when they've helped prepare it.

Never tried it, but i reckon kids who dont eat fruit could have fun with purees. All you need is a few cheap squeezy bottles filled with a selection of fruit purees. Let them make designs on a plate and use their fingers, breadsticks, sponge fingers to mop it up

Yeh i can see that working, i guess its all about really trying to engage the young ones in the process - maybe if they helped craft a plate of food themselves and really saw it pieced together they may get excited about it.

introducing characters that are well known to children may bring the food 'to life' on the plate.

also, really enjoyed the earlier posters' kyaraben lunches, the creativity crafted with the sushi is outstanding to be honest.
