Oh boy what a day!

It wasn't horrible really... actually it started out for me really well! My open went awesome but the AKM.. we'll call him Bob didn't come in for his shift. I couldn't even call him (we need a staff phone list asap and I am going to mention it to them) because the phone numbers were on the computer in the office.. doesn't do me much good on the line, huh?

Anyway I was fine online by myself for the remaining 45 minutes before the next person started and I did the best I could. I did as much prep as was essential and I left the non essential stuff for later. So whent he next guy (Jim) comes in I told him the sich and we did our best to run the line and we did it really well but finally Jim had to say something because Bob was running on two hours late. I asked if I could go offline to call Bob and as the owner was getting me his number Bob called.

Apparently he was out drinking last night and the DD got drunk too, so they were stuck out of town. He said he'd try and be there within the hour. Well an hour turned into two then turned into the whole shift ... I stayed until close of business at 3pm.. because..

We got KILLED!! I have no idea where they were coming from but there was a steady stream through the door and just when we thought we had a breather.. along came more orders.

At one point the owner came to me and asked if it would help us if he were to put on whites and do meats and I said... would you? that would be wonderful! While he didn't help is in terms of speed (orders were late and he told the FOH to give kid sized smoothies to everyone as a thank you for their patience) he kept us in meats and potatoes and that was what we needed! We all made sure to thank him for his help because he really saved our a$$es today!!

I think Bob is in some big doo doo.. at one point the owner was considering walking papers as this is not the first time Bob has done this kind of thing!

Thanks for letting me ramble.. I love this forum!!

Thanks bughut... one thing that did happen today was that I ran the kitchen. I just picked up and said.. do what you need to do to get through today and tomorrow till 1pm and if it doesn't fall into that category list it for prep tomorrow as they have a prep person in. I have supervised before and it was in a cuthroat place.. I worked the other supervisor kissed ***.. hated that place with a passion. I'll happily take the crap if the KM or anyone needs to send it if I made the wrong decision but for me the owness lays on the AKM and the fact he chose booze and pot over his job.

Try not to be bitter, you stepped up and took care of things as needed. That shows leadership ability to the owners.
One thing that's remarkable, the owner put on whites, stepped in and helped you. Maybe he wasn't fast, but he helped keep his business running as best it could under poor circumstances and he aided his employees when they needed it. That's a good thing. Many owners I've worked for haven't got a clue what to do in that situation, and only run around chewing people out (not really that effective.)
Kudos to you, good work, and a pat on the back.
Don't worry about the AKM, his behavior will catch up to him. If not now, in time.

Well the KM called today when I was out with my son and when I called her back she said she needed me to work Saturday was that ok and I said sure. She is really upset with the AKM and she needs to talk to me about things when I go in on Saturday. She did tell me that I wasn't in trouble.. I did what I had to do to get the job done and I told her that I have worked enough jobs to know that if I don't do something for whatever reason management is fine with it once I tell them why and well.. I'm not shy in that dept!
I guess I'll find out what is up on Saturday when I go in... I have a feeling that they are going to offer me the AKM position.. not sure if I want it but I will maybe do it on a trial basis for three months to see how it goes and how I manage in that role.

yeah I was so happy when the owner stepped in. Sure the times sucked but at least he had happy kitchen staff and I think he really may have seen just how much we do back there as well.
I have no patience for owners who have no idea what it's like on the front lines and just chew their staff out. That's not someone I want to work for for sure!
