Did you ever lose your kitchen mojo?

And how long till you found it again?

I've just been reminded by my boys that i well and truly lost mine for a week just before Easter this year. (They're still laughing 'cos they know i'm telling you guys)
I couldnt do anything without burning it, landing it on the floor, or generally screwing it up. We call that time the age of M&S. As mostly we ended up eating Marks & Spencers ready meals. (aways in the freezer for emergencies) or takeaways.

The following fortnight was spent in the US, at Folly beach Charleston where we'd rented a beach house. It took only 2 days to get my mojo back. We revelled in shrimp, shrimp and more shrimp (its just not the same back home) I took my usual spice kit with me and bought more (gotta have old bay) and cooked like a wifie possessed. I actually had to be persuaded to eat out.

So, Anyone else lost it?

Think I lost it last night. My paying job has been very very busy, I've had a real b**** of a cold, other half is away working for next 3 months....kids need to be taxied everywhere. Winds beens howling, rained for a week straight, freezing cold and miserable.

I should be in the kitchen cracking out nice steamy hot nourishing food with gusto.

No. I stood with fridges and freezers open, lookiing for inspiration. Nothing happened. Walked into the pantry. Nothing happened. Picked up some cook books. Still nothing happened.

Iwasn't even hungry, being ill, that didn't help. Kids were too busy with homework to help out. Right out of frozen meals.

Aargh. I don't like that feeling. But we had to eat. What I did have was a drawer of really fresh vegetables in the crisper, noodles in the pantry, my usual stock of sauces and spices.

They spoke to me eventually and the vegies said - come and chop us up, you know you like it when you're well- it relaxes you, noodles said - hey we are the easiest part of this- get that pot of water boiling, sauces and spices said get us in there - we want to join in. Oh and the kabana sausage in the freezer popped its head up and said - woman - you gotta have some protein - slice me and get cooking. Wok said - right - lets GO!

So they all got their way, and we got to eat. Turned out pretty ok.

But I reckon the kids are cooking tonight. I don't mind what comes out of the kitchen :)

Glad you got your kitchen mojo back Bughut, I think mine's gone on vacation.

I only ever lose it when I have nobody to cook for. I usually cook for my wife and mother-in-law, however they are going away for five days from Sunday. I know for a fact that for those five days I will cook nothing more than beans/mushrooms/tomatoes/poached eggs etc on toast, maybe some noodles or just soup and bread.

Lose it? I'm still queuing up for mine. :D

I am so short of natural culinary mojo it's borderline tragic. There are times I think that I could throw on a dress, change my name to Stella, and still not find my groove in the kitchen

I start off all cool and embracing mise en place, by the time I come to serve I'm juggling stuff, desperately looking for a clear bit of kitchen surface while trying not to slip on whatever I knocked over earlier - and that's just a cheese sandwich.

I worry not though, sooner or later my mojo will arrive, and when it does I'm gonna treat it right and make sure it never wants to leave.
