...and then it all went to black...

Sorry I have not been around. About two weeks ago my home was struck by lightning. Not only did we fry our computer, but also our A/C, our garage door opener, a large tree, and about six circuit breakers.

Don't worry, my sharpening stones are safe...

Wow, that sucks! Good thing your sharpening gear isn't electric!

I'm finding it's a lot worse than I first thought.

For example, when I replaced my computer, I was told that allI had to do was to re-attach the cable and I was good to go. Yikes, I cannot get into Outlook Express, this morning the computer told me I did not have cable access and now "girls in my area" want to meet me.

Granted these were simple repairs, but it's like losing the wardrobe of all of your comfortable clothes and replacing everything. Yeah, the stuff "looks" the same, but it all feels so different. And my typing skills got rusty in the past +2 weeks.

As for knife related issues, I sharpened two Shun santokus this week. Both of them had the stamp "Kai" under the traditional logo.

I do not know what that means.

Did Shun get bought out? Has the alloy changed? Has the manufacturing process changed?

Anyhoo, yikes...

I repaired consumer electronics for 27 years. Anything in the house that is electronic will probably need replacing so don't close out the insurance claim.

And just about everything has been replaced--and upgraded, in fact.

I'm not a computer guy, by nature. I always admit that the bike I ride has a motor first designed in 1936. Even my method of sharpening is +800 years old. I'm not a guy who embraces "change" that easily.

I even had a trainer at my gym design one of those P90X style work-outs for me. I figure, hey, I'll be hip and cutting edge.

It appears my sense of 'pain' doesn't like change either...
