Heirloom Seed Swap

For those interested in obtaining seed for heirloom veggies, there will be a seed swap at the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center (SMAC) in Berea, Kentucky, October 3, 2009.

"Seed swap" is a bit of a misnomer, as seed will be available for purchase as well as trade. Or maybe the participants will just hand you a sample to try---it's that kind of group.

Most of the participants are former members of the Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy, and rank among the most knowledgeable heirloom growers around. So even if you show up just to chat about heirlooms you're sure to benefit from attending.

If you plan on attending, PM me and I'll give you directions to SMAC.

Yeah, I know it sounds silly to travel that kind of distance for a one-day meeting. But....

Last year we had people attend from 7 states. Nobody came as far as 3,000 miles, of course. But even to come from South Carolina, as some did, shows the kind of dedication heirloom enthusiasts have.

When AHSC (Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy) was still in operation we held our annual convention at the same locale. Folks did travel from as far as Oklahoma and New Mexico to attend what amounted to a 2-day event.

Hmmmmmm? Maybe hopping on a plane from Oregon isn't as outlandish as it sounds at first blush.
