I'm going to spend the next week working pantry to cover for vacation. OMG i hate pantry. I think i would rather cook employee meals for a YEAR than work pantry for a week......I don't know is it just me???? but those are the 2 things i hate most in the kitchen.....Pantry and employee meals. I would much rather do dishes any day of the week than do those 2 things.....what jobs in the kitchen do you dispize??? oh yeah, inventory sucks too......

Honestly, there is no role that I despise in the kitchen. I think it is important to remember that all parts of the restaurant are integral to the team. I have no problem making a staff meal, and I am the Exec Sous Chef of the hotel. Ditto for dishes, and for the Pantry.

What makes the pantry so unglamorous for you? In my kitchen's pantry, we roll sushi, plate some kickass desserts, or some cool salad dishes.

In the end, it is all how you look at it. You may hate it, but why can you not like it?

I'm not a fan of doing crepes. I can do them but it's just not my favourite station. I like to have a prep shift once in a while or even a dish shift just for a change of pace from the line but I will clean the hoods and the entire kitchen for that matter if it means I don't have to do crepes!

The pantry is my job. And I have not complained about it once since I started. I hope to learn the other stations and move up, but i'm thankful for employment and as long as I have work, I have no complaints about it being in the pantry.

On another note, I absolutely hate cleaning hood baffles. And cleaning up the black stuff that the mats leave everywhere.

pantry only sucks cause noone gives it the respect its due. I know what some of you are thinking and its been said once already.."It's not really cooking is it?" and " How hard is it to put some lettuce on a plate?" well the answers are, "yes" and "no" and "it isn't, but it can be time consuming". It doesn't involve fire so the little pyromaniac in us cooks isn't pleased. But the part of us that likes to arrange and dress a plate can appreciate the effort that can go into a nice looking salad. Also making custom dressings is a fun way to explore flavors.
Also, how hard is it to grill a steak? not very. how interesting is a steak on a plate? again, not very. Thus the Steak Diane was made and the Steak Oscar. How interesting is a Garden or House salad? not very. Now, how interesting and complex is a Nicoise, Oriental or Chef Salad? while still not rocket science they are a time consuming delicate art that can look like crap if someone doesn't care enough. Be not ashamed for working pantry, its the first place to learn exacting standards.
