I know next to nothing about cooking

Why I am I here you ask? Well, a family member wants to help a chef friend bring a food service product to market. The chef friend thinks the product has great potential, but my family member would like to get the opinion of other chefs. I use Internet forums all the time and I thought there might be some chefs here that could offer their opinion of the product.

Since I have posted on other forums before, I am sensitive to the rules against selling products. I don't think I would be violating that rule because there is nothing to sell. The only thing that has been produced so far are a couple of prototypes. The chef friend created a YouTube video that shows how the product works. I would like to post a link to the YouTube video, but before I do I want to make sure that I won't be in violation of the rules. What do you think? Would it be okay for me to post the link and ask what the chefs on this board think of the product?

Hello dblagent007. When you joined Chef Talk, you were asked to agree to the community guidelines. Among those, as you wisely note, are prohibitions against solicitation. Since this product is in the "kicking it around" stage and you're not asking anyone here to endorse, buy or sell it, you may participate in the general forums. (You're welcome to read the Professionals' forums- we all are- but only pro members may post there.)

I'd be interesting in knowing a bit of what it takes to get a product to market. I bet others are, too. I advise you to contact Nicko, the community founder/administrator, or Jim, who is also an administrator, if you have questions.

Enjoy the site,

Thanks for the reply. I am not all that knowledgeable about how to "get a product to market." The family member friend of mine is more knowledgeable about that kind of thing.

However, the product they want to bring to market is definitely on the simpler side so it is just a matter of a) making it, which includes prototypes to make sure it works and full-scale production (injection molding) and b) marketing and distributing it (I think they plan on putting it in distributor catalogs).

I'll contact those people you mentioned. I would like to post a link to a YouTube video (made by the chef that came up with the idea) that shows the product (one of the few prototypes that have been made) and ask people what they think of it. Nothing more than that.
