getting a tatto today....OUCH

O.K. so what kind of tatto does a guy named FRYGUY get........thats easy, flames baby, flames. this has really nothing to do with cooking but i'm gettin' a liitle nervous as the time get's close. It's going to be a large piece taking up my whole upper arm probable be in the chair for 4 to 5 hours. I really don't want to get anything on my fore arms because I don't want to freek out the old ladies here at the club........

I've never really understood the whole tattoo thing.:rolleyes: Years ago I considered it but couldn't think of anything I'd be sure I'd still want to look at in 10 or 20 years. For instance, about 20 years ago I considered getting a tattoo of the smiley-face-with-the-bullet-hole that serves as the calling card of Rorschach from the graphic novel series Watchmen. That would have been fine for 20 years but now people would probably say, "oh, you got it from the movie!" :lol:

One of my best friends is a collector of dragon tattoos, he's covered with them. They suite him and his style but wouldn't really work for me. Maybe I could get a tat of a pair of crossed chef's knives, maybe a Hattori KD and a Tanaka R2?:lol:

At any rate, good luck with the tattoo!

I worked with a guy who had the coolest "sleeves" and kept adding and adding to them. The artwork on his arms is completely amazing.

Flame Tattoo for the FryGuy!

Getting a tattoo is like getting stung by one bee for 5 hours. It doesn't hurt like "Oh, God, make it stop", but it's really an annoying pain.

This artist is going to sell you a work of art that you'll have forever. You can't sell it to someone else. Scrutinize the guy like you would a doctor about to do surgery on you. Hopefully, you know his work, you know people he's worked on, you've asked about his experience and philosophy, and you've gained something of a personal relationship with the artist. You need some mutual trust. That will give you a piece of artwork you'll be proud to show forever.

What I don't understand is people getting drunk and making a tattoo decision. I'm very proud of the artist and art I own.

Eh.....

Now why would you want to go and smear a perfectly good body with graffitti?

Do yourself a favour and go and volunteer at an old folk's home.

Help a 80 year old guy with 60 year old tats into the tub.

Some say it's art, I say it's body graffitti, the argument could go on forever.

One thing you can't argue away:

A tattoo is designed for one, and only one thing:

To attract attention.



Think twice.

It's a concious decision. You weren't born with it, neither were your parents, and don't find fault with people who don't want to hire because of it--it ain't no birth defect.....

The trick is to never put yourself in a position to be in front of the judge unless you are sharing a scotch and a cigar after a day of pheasant hunting. ;)
I have one tat. After 20 years I thought about getting it removed. Once I saw the price tag I thought of a lot of other things I'd rather have.
I really like some of the work but IMO half sleeves are a lot more appropriate as many employers will not hire people with visible tats.

My younger brother just did a portion of his 1/2 sleeve the old fashioned way by a traditional Samoan tatoo artist. He said it was the most brutal 4 hours of his life and would never go that route again.

ok soooo 5 hours in the chair and it's not done yet, almost but not quite. I'm lovin' it .....covers most of my left upper arm, bicept area. very cool flames that fade from dark blue to almost white. The artist is top notch and i know several people that he has done, all amazing work. This is my 4th so i'm really not new to the game but i have kept everything above my elbows as to not sacrifice my integrity or future job options. this biz it is all about perception I realize alot of people can really go off the deep end with tats but thats not me. I've also worked a couple of places where you have a better chance with the more tats you have. Also, these day's tats are MUCH more acceptable than they used to be ......I'll post a pic later so y'all can check it out....

With any luck, we will all be old farts one day. I just happen to not care what my tattoos look like when that time comes around. Anyone who has a problem with me because of the way my tattoos look, or the fact that I have tattoos, isn't someone I care to associate with anyway. Getting a tattoo is a commitment and that comes with the territory. There's gonna be people that don't like them and don't have a problem telling you.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I've just never understood why people that don't want/and or care for tattoos seem so passionate about the subject and are always the first person to pipe up with the "how they will look later" line.

It's not personal.

The thing is that many of us felt that way when we were young. That may be an issue ten years from now if you have a full sleeve and tats across your knuckles as you interview for your dream job. The establishment hiring may have a clean cut image and you just lost out because of a choice you made when you were young. Tattoos may be more accepted now but that matters little as what is common or popular today won't likely won't be the same in ten years.
The sad thing is a lot of what I see is really poor work. If you get one wait until you can hire a good artist.

There are 7 of us at my place, all are women, and 4 of us are over 30 with 2 being over 50. I am the only one without a tatoo. 2 of the women have them in places that aren't seen like bikini line or over the breast, one has an ankle bracelet type tat, and 2 of the young girls (20 and 21) have completely silly tats- in my opinion. One of them gets tatooed when a family member dies-"I love you Gram" with a heart sort of thing- she has 4. The other has an oven mit on her wrist that is done in pastel colors. On her upper hip- so it shows when she bends over or her shirt rides- is an elephant that she thought was "cute". It is. Cute. It's more like coloring than art. The art I sort of get.

Then there's the woman who applied for a job with me. She had a tat up the back of her neck, was about 45 but had seen some hard times and looked closer to 60. She wore her hair up to show it off. Not art. Not even cute.

Oh yeah! I saw an older woman this summer from a distance with what looked like some bad spider vein problem on her upper thigh and I thought, "how sad for her". When I got closer, I realized it was a tatoo- done in blue. Not a thought out choice for a woman's thigh. She obviously didn't think ahead.

If you've never had one, it's not easy to explain the pleasure of actually having one. I love mine, although I'm away to get it tweaked... I've a small tribal on my wrist, which is amazingly easy to hide, as i had it positioned so it wouldn't be seen from most angles. I'm having it feminised by having a sharp outline, blending into the base of my hand just below the pinkie. OH thinks everything I do is okay, so I really dont have a problem with anyone else..It's personal. And they can be very sexy.

No.1 son has a full Japenese sleeve. Carp/water/demons and a dragon over his chest, back and shoulder...Magnificent. No.2 son is more into tribal. Last one was awful, cos he worked around his moles. (what a mess. Lots of moles) So he has lots of holes in the finished art work. Doesnt know what to do about it.

I got my first one this year.
It's on my inner right forearm.
I would absolutely LOVE to be around to see what it looks like in 50 years.
