I am in San Fran and stopped be Blue Bottle coffee and had A wonderful cappucino. Anyone else tried Blue bottle? I am here for two days (business) any suggestions for other places to try/visit?
Grilled or sautéed sand dabs (a West Coast fish) at Tadich Grill, downtown near the financial district. You're Greek so it might be old-hat to you, but they're one of my must-eats whenever I'm there. :lips:
Cool just looked them up Suzanne thanks for the tip. The Publican in Chicago has Sand Dabs but only once in a while. Never tried them so I will make sure to try them next chance I get.
For coffee, you hit the bullseye with Blue Bottle. I don't know what neighborhood you're in, but you might want to give Dynamo Donuts (I know, I know) and Ritual a try (in the Mission); and maybe the Coffee Bar in Potrero Heights.
Besides Tadich (on California) there's also Sam's, a couple of walkable blocks away on Bush. Very similar menus and quality -- I'm not going to tell you one is better than the other -- they both have plenty of history and are pretty much fungible in a weird and wonderful San Francisco way. Sam's is a little less touristy, and about half the wait. If you like your bars jammed, noisy and right in the middle of the restaurant -- Tadich rocks.
Pretty much everything is good at either place, but the sand dabs are killer at both. Tadich has an especially good cioppino, Sam's has good sweetbreads. When I lived in the Bay Area, I used to eat at Sam's more often than Tadich, because of the waits. Sam's takes reservations except on Saturday, Tadich doesn't take them at all. Tadich also doesn't give celebrities preference -- which can be pretty funny.
Unfortunately Original Joe's is being remodeled after a fire, otherwise it's up there with Tadich and Sam's as a must. But if you're doing old-school SF restaurants, you might also want to give Little Joe's a try (5th and Mission); and/or New Joe's on Geary.
Have cioppino somewhere. Scoma's is pricey but unbelievably good.
Speaking of touristy and coffee, you've got to have an Irish Coffee at the Buena Vista. No excuses.
And remember: San Francisco isn't a city, it's a theme park.
Work safe. Make lots of money. Play nice. Have a good time.
Make the effort to look a little deeper and you will find the city beneath the theme park. It's here.
Let me know if there's something specific you're looking for.
