Mezzaluna,

ありがとう と thank you!
I guess having a son and wanting to cook him some real American Food got me/ solidified my interest in food. Do I bake? Not too much as Japanese Kitchens don't have ovens.
I have been a lurker on these forums for the past 4 months, I figured I would say "hi".
What I most enjoy is the process towards the meal- the tension, nervousness, prep, and then putting it all together. My zen is in the process!
How about you? Outcome or process?

Thanks Again,
A.D.

Process, definitely. As a home cook I manage most of the time to pull off a decent meal. Hanging out here has given me tons more skills, knoweldge and confidence; my husband has benefited from it!

Sometimes I choose a complicated recipe deliberately, especially ones with lots of vegetables to chop. My zen is reached at the cutting board.

No ovens in Japanese homes? Can you buy a countertop model? I'd be lost without my oven.

Mezzaluna,

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, most Japanese homes come with a 3 range stove and a little drawer for grilling fish.
My microwave has an oven setting, but it's a far cry from a proper oven.
My toaster oven works well for toast and fries!

They do have commercial ovens and I could buy an oven, but I don't have any space.

You get used to not having an oven. I don't bake very much, and my slow cooker can augment a lot of what I'd use an oven for.

Thanksgiving/Christmas is taken care oven by the fine people at the Brazilian Supermarket who cook rotisserie chickens most weekends, and have turkey around Christmas time- whole cooked turkey!

Living over here one has to pretty much substitute a lot or make something from scratch. All the raw basics are available, but not much more.

It's made me REAL creative let me tell you!

Take care,

A.D.

P'etalsandcoco,

Thank you very much!
I definitely look forward to sharing any information, ideas, musings, recipes.

For some people the zen is the outcome, for others it's in the process to the outcome.
And the Western thought would be both I guess.

Just my own thoughts I reckon.

Thanks again,

A.D.
