Craft - restaurant review

We had an excellent meal at Tom Colicchio's Craft restaurant.  I'm weary sometimes going to celebrity chefs' restaurants but this one was particularly good and very reasonably priced.

We started with an amuse bouche: a fried mussel with an excellent sauce though I didn't know what it was.

For starters I had crispy bacon (deep fried pork belly, I couldn't resist).  It was served with pickled crispy little cork screws that I was told are a relative of a water chestnut.  The bacon was a little tough but it tasted good.  My dinner companion started with roasted quail - a very simple presentation, just a quail, mostly deboned, cut in half and beautifully cooked medium.

Main course for me was a grass-fed ribeye accompanied by bone marrow and served with the best pureed potatoes I'd ever eaten,.  My companion chose the duck with roasted fingerling potatoes.  Again, both dishes were a very simple presentation, just sliced meat.  No sauces, no strange garnishes, no drizzles, just simple good food.

For dessert we shared an apple tart with calvados custard and apple cider sorbet, and an assortment of cookies which we took home and enjoyed for a few more days. 

All in all it was an excellent meal.  Straight-forward good local ingredients without a lot of fanfare.  We were not dissapointed.  At the coat check they even gave us carrot/coconut muffins to take home with us for breakfast.

We haven't been to Craft yet but the next time we hit Vegas I'm going to be all over it like a Duck on a June bug!
The grass fed rib eye sounds great.

I think the most wonderful thing in the world is another chef. I'm always excited about learning new things about food.
