You are stranded on desert island, courtesy of BBC Radio 4, you can take 10 ingredients/items of food with you. What would they be?
Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO...

Bertha's

Jim: the mussels are very good, yes, but we thought the crab cakes were the best we'd ever eaten!

Rachel: I'm working on my list; hope it's okay if I supply reasons for the inclusions of items...?

Hey, since I don't need to bring water, can I bring jasmine flowers to plant? I think I might need something with a perfume if I am going to be stranded alone ;)

miraculously this island has a basic set of kitchen utensils, two pots and a river. There are lots of seafood and some small animals - nothing big that can become too scary. Unfortunately CC you couldn't make your own -island style jamon serrano is it's too humid to cure anything.. . .but you could smoke it (after you've killed a small wild boar).
When you have your list can you consider something else - what would you cook? what would you do?

I know CC, but before you got the idea of making island jamon serrano as an addition to your supplies, I thought I'd better warn you of its impossibility.
Now what will you do with the fish?

Well, Mr. Bond, we know that YOU might loll on the beach, but you're never stranded. I presume you'll just keep ordering deliveries???

Let's see, what would I want to bring...

* Garlic, that absolute necessity of life
* Onions, ditto, possibly in the form of shallots or spring onions
* Potatoes
* Bell peppers
* Some sort of chili pepper
* Zucchini
* Tomatoes
**A pregnant cow (preferably pregnant with a male offspring)
**A hen (chicken)
**a rooster

Please note that the items marked with * could all be planted (or yield seeds for planting), to raise future crops. We'll just forget for the moment that I have a "black thumb," and can kill any plants in the wink of an eye.

The ** items can supply the milk and eggs, as well as future milk, eggs, and meat. Wait, does that mean I'd have to ... :eek:

But I figure I'm in this for the long haul.

Let me explain about the Jasmine flower if I may, When I found out that water was automatic I decided to add the jasmine flowers. I have made a few honeys..vanilla and lavedar as examples, So I would plant the jasmine flowers to attrack honey bee's that I would then harvest there honey to drizzel on the bread I would make with my other items. I had mentioned in the honey thread a while back That I intended to make Jasmine honey.
Since I would be alone I would need to taste something sweet that carried a perfume aroma. I would need to remain civil on this island all alone

Aaah...Prelude to Survivor, Cheftalkcafe.:D

Gotta have rice and rice seedlings Would this count as two?). How can I live without my staple? I can make noodles out of this, too.

Wheat flour, for bread and cake and noodles. Since there is lots of humidity, there'll be some natural yeast in the air so I catch that.

Since there are birds on the island, I'll raise some and harvest their eggs. How else anc we make cake? When they get too old then we'll make stock. Afterall, we'd need some broth for those noodles.

Tomatoes. Nice heirloom varieties so that I can plant their seeds and have a never ending supply of tomatoes.

Oil. Grapeseed, preferably. But I'll take olive oil if nothing else.

Fresh cream. BBC4 will have to ship some to me every once in a while as I don't suppose there'll be refrigeration. With fresh cream, I can skim off the top and use as it or make butter (sometimes I like to have a croissant for breakfast). The remaining milk can be used for other stuff.

Sugar. Can't make pastries with out this and I'm not about to refine my own from the plentiful palm trees on the island.

Citrus fruit. Perhaps BBC4 will be so kind as to enroll me in a fruit of the month program?

Chocolate. I don't think any one needs to explain this one.

Garlic. Life just wouldn't be worth living without.

Tea. I plan to remain civilized, afterall.

And I'll pray that the island will have nuts of some sort, honey bees and vanilla orchids.
SmartGirl to the rescue!
