nigerian cake scamers

got this fom the boss, a nice order but the wording of the letter sounds just like the nigerian check scams.
Do you thinnk this is on the up and up??

I'm a little concerned about this one.

Hello , thanks for the swift reply to my order request, and for your concern as well,  I want you to know that  am very grateful, and am really inspired ever since the first time I tasted your cake, that is why I will prefer you bake for me..or i  rather  not bake a cake for my wedding.... :D

I will like  you to bake for me separate 5 tier cake, I want some tier to be chocolate  and some to be Vanilla flavor cake , and they should be decorated with pink roses as seen in the picture i attached, what you see in the picture is a four tier separated stand cake, but i want five tier cake, let the flower be made of silk, which is non real flowers. ( in the picture what you see on the side on the cake is a polka dot, dot, i will like the color of the polka dot to be blue, brown and purple). And you should also have  the cake covered in fondant or butter cream,  and the inscription should be writing on one side of the tier as “Happy Married Life”. After which you will packaged in your regular cake boxes for pick, Once they are ready for pick up .

They should be ready for pick up by  3 O'clock PM  on the 22nd of April 2010...and  a private shipper will be coming to pick them up...to delivery to my wedding reception in Canada and i dont want you  to be worried about the safety delivery of the cake. Regarding the shipping ,I have a private shipping agent  that will take good care of pick up and the delivery consignments. The Shipper will come for the pickup  arrangement of the Cake at your place, at the pick up date and time.

And as I have told you previously, you  don’t have anything to be worry about on the shipping of the cake it will be well secure and in a good condition on arriving the location of my wedding reception in Toronto Canada, the shipper will be coming with there refrigerator Van  for the pick up and it will be ship under the fragile shipping insurance scheme, a friend of mine has use them before for a shipping consignment of this such and they are well reliable, dependable and secure…..

So I want you to calculate for me what will be the total cost of the cake  order including the decoration plus tax if included, and also I want you to add $980 for the cost of the pick up and the shipping, so once I have your reply for the total I will remit my credit card for you to charge for the total cost…so that you can have the order book right away. And once you have the order secured, I will have the shipper contact you for the pick up schedule arrangement, also i will instruct you further on how you will pay the shipping fee to the shipper as to confirm the pickup arrangement of the cake. Willingly Am also offering you an extra $100 for taking care of my order properly and for any less stress you will go through for completing the transaction for me due to my absence.

So please do calculate altogether the total cost of the cake + decoration and tax +  $980 for shipping charges, including the $100 am offering you, then get back to me with the total for all, so once i have your reply for  the total cost i will remit my credit card for you to run for the charges, also let me know is you accept Visa or Master card.
I will be waiting to have your reply for the total cost then we can proceed from there, hope to hear from you soonest.

Thanks and God bless.

Yeah, it does sound strange. But..... the offer of a credit card might be the difference. Once you have the number, and the charges are confirmed, then you're safe. Unless, of course, it's an identity theft sort of thing.

I would follow up, carefully.

Question: Can you make that kind of cake in four days?

4 days= 96 hours, absolutely.

i would be concerned about boxing for shipping,

i have not yet seen the picture.

can a card be chaged back?
my concern is they are all to willing to pay extra and why would we add cost for shipping, that should be arranged with the customer and shipper right?

Yeah, we just had a "customer" call using that service for deaf people to use phone calls ordering several items for 150 people and offered their credit card.  The whole exchange was strange, particularly the grammar.  Obvious English wasn't their first language.  We looked up some info and found that there has been scams recently using that service, because the US gov't pays for the service... even if the call is from Africa.  Not really sure what they were getting out of it, but it had the distinct smell of fraud.

It's a scam. If you're friends with the local police, you might be able to do the world a favor and have whoever picks up the cake arrested.

The first clue to any scam is when they offer you extra money. No one does this. I am so sick of these scammers. They are all over the place. My son is looking for his first car and don't you know the first two cars he picks try to run a scam. One from Craiglist and one from Autotrader.
Rule of thumb, if it sounds too good it probably is!
I hope they all get busted!!!!!!!!!

Hmm, It does sound like a scam to me. More like an insurance scam rather than anything else. The Manglish gives it away.

Do not email them back.

Stop all contact with them.

They will use any and all info they can steal from you.

The scam is that the bakery pays the shipping cost (which isn't really a shipping cost, but cash wired to the scammer) with the stolen credit card.  While the bakery may not be out the money, it has become the money-launderer.  That's why the shipping has to be so far too, to make it a high cost.  Scammer gives baker stolen credit card number, baker gets authorization for charges and wires cash for "shipping" to scammer.

Do you guys get the people who call and ask who they're speaking to and then send you two rolls of printer paper and ink cartridges with a $500 bill? I had one put some kind of health care plan in my name on my employer's credit card (no idea how they got the #, I don't know it). I won't even talk to a legit salesman on the phone now because of it. Had a guy call today, could barely speak English asking me how my kitchen printer was. My what? You know, the printer the orders come from. I told him the printer in the kitchen the orders come from is called a waitress as I don't have a POS system. He hung up.

Grey,

When I get telemarketing calls of any kind, I give them approximately this line:

"My charge to listen to your sales pitch is $75 for every 5 minute increment.  Please may I have your name, social security number and credit card information so that we may continue this call?  I'll need to verify your credit too, but it will just take a few minutes do to, billed at the $75 rate"

They've usually hung up by the time I get to the end and I rarely get such calls anymore.

When I get those calls I usually ask "what are you wearing?" or something along those lines. Usually I get hung up on pretty quickly, but then sometimes those conversations get interesting.

My bosses were happy to know it was a scam though they are greedy for money and almost had me make the cake until they looked it up themselves.
