Chicago Trip

We're back from our vacation and we had a great time! We stayed downtown at the Travelodge on Harrison... I got a good deal on that hotel through travelocity and although it was old, it was clean and the bed was very comfortable.  The room was on the smaller side but for two people it was just fine.  We asked for extra pillows and they sent them up right away and we found the staff to be very polite and helpful.  Michigan avenue was just around the block and the first thing we did was walk through Grant Park and Millennium parks.  We did alot of getting on and off of buses just to see where we'd end up so we saw alot of the city that way.  Our neighbours suggested we get on the trains in the loop and just look around and we did that as well.  We went to the Art Institute and the Chicago History museum.  Unfortunately I managed to catch the bug that had been making its way through the kitchen last week, so I felt like garbage the day we went to the History Museum but it was still interesting. (I just sat down alot)  We walked around Old Town and I loved the spice shop there.  As much as I wanted to buy a few things there I didn't because I wasn't sure if I'd be allowed to carry them on the plane, and I didn't want to risk anything being damaged in the checked baggage.  We saw the Blue Man Group on Wednesday and the show was amazing!  We really enjoyed it!  If you haven't seen it, and you ever get a chance to, you should.. it is worth seeing.  They do international tours as well and the next time they come here I am going to get tickets.  Thursday we went to Second City but we left at intermission because I really wasn't feeling well and it hurt my throat to laugh.  The part of the show that we did see was quite funny.  As for meals, we were boring.  We discovered the Exchequer on Wabash and had all three of our dinners there.  The food was very good, service was good, and OMG the portions were huge compared to what we're used to here in Canada.  We had lunch at the Garden Cafe in the Art Institute on Wednesday, and that was also good. I had the special of the day.. hummus and pita with a salad and my husband had a sandwich with curried lamb soup and we enjoyed our lunch quite a bit.  We had breakfast on Wednesday at Yolk on Michigan Avenue and we really enjoyed it.  The concept of yolk is very similar to the place I work at, but the difference is that Yolk is more modern, whereas our place is a little more old fashioned.  Breakfast was good, and when I asked them to sub mushrooms for scrambled eggs in my breakfast quesidilla they didn't have a problem with accomodating me at all.  Neither of us tried a deep dish pizza.. we did see people eating it, and honestly it didn't appeal to either of us that much.  I read up on the history of the deep dish and that was interesting though.

Once I get them off of the camera, I'll post a few pictures.

OK ... where am I going?.. and WHY am I in this handbasket??

What? No Hot Dougs? No Pizza Uno or Duo? Well, so long as you had a good time. Welcome back!

The day we planned to hit Hot Doug's I was miserably sick... I knew on the day we left I was coming down with something and it hit me with both barrels on Thursday.  I managed to drag my sorry backend around the History Museum and Old Town and that afternoon after a sad lunch of pizza hut express around the corner from the hotel I crashed for three hours while hubby worked on his ongoing dungeons and dragons game and rested his  feet.  I still felt  lousy but I dragged it out of bed and we did some touring around just because I felt it was unfair to him to have to spend his time in the city babysitting my sorry sick butt.   That night we went to the Second City and we left at intermission as laughing, breathing, drinking and pretty much everything hurt my throat.  We thanked the teachers for including us in the shows but we had to leave as I was miserable. They were understanding and thanked us for being there in the event our son had an issue and they needed us.

The deep dish pizza scared me.. it was HUGE and I just didn't think I could stomach THAT much goop in one setting!  I've never been a fan of goopy pizza.. pizza hut is as close to deep dish as this wimp is ever gonna get...lol

and it is good to be back!!  I missed my doggie... and all of you as well...
