Goat Watch 2010

That's right folks getting to that time again.

This year I have two pregnant does/dams and am expecting at least three kids. Hopefully all female this time. Last years buck Finley is a great little buck at 10-11 months old and still drinking Mother's Milk he is a delicious looking piece of meat. Yes, he has gone from being too good to sell and wanting to keep as a pet......To looking really delicious...if he makes it 2 more months I'll surprise myself.

Anyway, my first goat up is Maharani she should drop at least 2 kids (fingers crossed) and bonus this is her second pregnancy. She is showing sign of being ready in the next 2 days. Double our dairy production in the next year, booyah.

.......AAAAAANNNNNNNDDDDDD SOOOOOOOOOOOO......Maharani dropped three kids since my last post. I went and checked and she was just laying down and starting to peek a kid. The first was breech but small enough not to be an issue and the other 2 shot right out, one after the other, head first. 2 Grey and black and one mostly black. They were all breathing before i got them to their mother and she started licking and cleaning all 3 as soon as she got them....a good goat mommy. Will determine sexes tomorrow. That's all for now from Goat Watch 2010.. stay tuned for Pi's first kid(s).

I got giddy thinking of the joy of the births... Congrats!!! To you and the ma.... and then I think of how tastey the guy-goat was looking to you and it makes me sad.  I think it's an estrogen thing.  Don't get me wrong: I Lerve the goat meat.   It's just that my family history includes primarily raising black angus cattle, all of whom were traded to other black angus farms at slaughter time 'cause they couldn't eat that which they had raised.

I think I'll just focus on the goofy-ness of the triplets galavanting on legs too big for them...and eat some beef or chicken....

Little update.....all the baby goats seem to be female.....seem to be okay, we will see who is still around in the morning......my wife has informed me I am not allowed to eat Finley...no matter how delicious he is looking. *sigh* anyone want a perfectly fattened  pet goat?

Gunnar,

Congrats on the new additions to the family !  After reading your live updates....how could anyone want to ......you know .....

As for Finley, I looked up the meaning of the name , it is Irish for "Fair Haired One "......

Look forward to new updates. A pic if you can manage would be nice.

There will be plenty of time for stew in the future. :)

So I have added pics to my photo album, be warned, fresh birth will be seen in a couple. The first two are my wife with the momma goat getting contractions, then me and messy goat babies and then a couple of pics with clean and roaming goat babies.

Everyone made it through the night, no issues yet (knock on wood) can only hope the next delivery in a couple of weeks goes as well as this one did.

need to get a picture of Finely up so people can admire the predicament I am in.

no, Finley is not pictured in those photos. He was born around this time last year (find my Goat Watch 2009 post) and is now bigger then Maharani (the new mommy goat) I'll get a pic of him up later.

No names for those three new girls yet either.  My wife and I usually wait a bit and try to get a feel for names good for the animal. Kind of silly, I am sure. feel free to suggest, I am pretty easy going about it.

All the kids are still doing fine between bouts of sleeping and wobbling about and feeding off of mom. When my wife gets home we will make sure that everyone is doing fine (again) and make sure they all have a feeding before bed tonight.

I would like to throw some names out there...Maharani is Indian....Finley is Irish....so I am guessing its whatever strikes the fancy.....

And how are the little wee ones today .....

A few Irish names (Golf course in Ireland) I know, can`t help myself, my sister is leaving for two weeks at the end of july for their 25th anniversary and I decided to send them to Ring of Kerry for the day and maybe stay a wee bit longer on the 19th hole...

Tralee

Adare

Killarney

Kerry

Then there are always some great wines :

Syrah

Merlot

Chablis

just making list......

well I ran them all by my wife...she is still thinking. I thought Killarney was a good name. The goaties are looking great, all springing and hopping when awake. I promise to add some cute pics as soon as I get my wife camera.

A couple of pics of Finely have been added to my photo album, 1 more of my dog Riley too now that he is a bit bigger.

think we might have some names, we are leaning towards Mary(queen of Scots), Elisabeth (or Queen Bess for short) and Bridget (the Irish one). and Finn is totally off the menu for sure, my wife is just beside herself with indignation that I even brought up the idea of eating him. Course in the future any bucks not perfect for our breeding stock are going to be in trouble.
