BOILED PEANUTS!

I recently moved to Charlotte, North Carolina from Minneapolis, MN. About a year ago I found one of the most addictive foods I have ever come across: boiled peanuts.

They take raw peanuts, brine them and them simmer them for about 8-10 hours and voila, heaven.

 

I'm wondering if anyone has ever cooked them before. I found some "green peanuts" at the farmers market a few days ago, bought a pound and now have to cook them. I've only had regular and cajun flavors.

Anyone have a good recipe? I have some blackening spice that I make and keep on hand. I figure i'll just brine them, drain them, put them in the crock pot(which seems to be the prefered method) with fresh water and the seasoning.

 

They seem strait forward, but any advice will be appeciated.

Just be leary. Boiled peanuts can be as addictive as heroin.

 

When I make them I just put them in a stock pot of simmering, heavily salted water and let 'em go until the shells are soft. Never timed it, but it takes awhile; 8 or so hours doesn't sound unreasonable.

oh, believe me. my girlfriend and I got into an argument after we bought some because she was eating them while I was driving and couldn't eat any. I needed my fix!

Sorry to be a killjoy but just a warning about using raw peanuts. A fungus which has the nasty habit of producing an incredibly carcinogenic toxin is quite partial to the odd peanut. Industrially processed peanuts (especially in developed countries) are screened well but you need to be careful of raw peanuts.

 

(If you want to smile, my microbiology professor also gave us a historical account of testicular cancer in chimney sweeps caused by soot particles. This, he said, together with the aflatoxin info above, shows that to avoid cancer one must always wash ones nuts...)

I and the hubby have tried boiled peanuts....and I respectfully decline thank you.  I encourage anyone to eat them if they like that sorta "thing" but I just cant eat them without gagging.  Now.....take those peanuts and deep fry them OMG...now iam in LOVE.

Seems to be a love it or hate it kind of thing, JustJP. Friend Wife is like you; can't abide them.

Eight hours of cooking seems too long. I boil green peanuts with 4 Tbls. of salt per pound of peanuts for 3 to 5 hours. They are perfect.

You may be right, Chefken. Like I said, I never timed 'em. Just put them up to cook, and when they're done, they're done.

Do you eat them whole? Shell and all?

Absolutely!

 

Although sometimes I peel them and use the nuts in a salad. I do that, for instance, with my kohlrabi slaw.

i wouldn't necessarily be boiling or even simmer them, but cooking on the low setting in the crockpot. i will keep a close eye on them after 5 hours...

i've boiled nuts before but have never tried them plain , usually for me, the boiling is to soften them up so they can be coated in brown sugar and baked to get them nice and candied ,,,,when ur done boiling the peanuts for 8 hrs or so ,is there a certain way to dry them or do you just eat them as is
