The Proverbial Crossroad

After much debating on my last thread here, I took people's advice on leaving my workplace.  I ran into an old manager who use to work at my unit who climbed up the corporate ladder and found me another position within the company at a different unit, she all too well understood the problems of my unit.

 

Now, one of the biggest problems will not be around for at least the summer after years of abusive behavior and demonstrations of serious incompetence and ignorance.  In his place temporarily is someone who has proven herself, she had a great working relationship with my chef so he vouches for her as do a number of other people I know who worked under her after she pushed them up the corporate ladder.  She also impressed the H.E. double hockey sticks out of me with several things shes done in the short time that shes been here.  She is also fully away of my desire to leave and wants to have a 1 on 1 talk with me. 

 

Now, I'm at a bit of a crossroads here.  On one hand, I'm guaranteed another position else where earning more money and doing less work but still within the same company but under a different "branch".  I'll still be doing kitchen work but it might be a step back from being a supervisor until/unless I prove myself to the unit manager.  On the other hand, I may have someone who can help me push my career forward if I play my cards right with her while working in a unit I'm already familiar with, I might also bring up my pay issue with her at our meeting.  So theres my dilemma; I can either go somewhere else with more pay but I have to work my way back up again or go from where I am now with potential to rise up higher but I may have to burn my other bridge. 

 

Thoughts?

Hey Headless, I would lay all my cards on the table when you have your 1 on 1 with her! You like and respect her so she will probably give you the best advice possible for your situation.

Just remember that Mr. Wonderful can return or someone like him. This biz has its share of those people who seem to survive without normal oxygen but by the gases found  up there bosses behinds. Unfortunately these people are everywhere so learning to deal with them can make you much stronger and sometimes you can even effect a change on them by getting them to realize that they need not attempt to inflate there egos at the expense of hurting others or always being right. Good luck and let us know how it goes..................

Now's not the time to wifle-waffle.  She's great, pees lemonade, and all that.  But you need to move on, meet new people, take over new challanges, and enjoy life a bit.  Tell her you'd love to work for her--at a different location.

Only you have the answer to this one. Like Gypsy says, go with your gut instinct. I was in a similar position last year when I had had enough, I found another job in a new place but the prospects there were unknown. The old place dangled the proverbial carrot and I could not decide on what to do. After carefully weighing it all up I moved on, I figured that I had already made my decision based on XY and Z and that very little was going to change should I stay put. Looking back now it was the best thing I could have done.

 

Don't be afraid to move out of your comfort zone, there is a lot to be said for staying in one job for a long time, however, I have gained far more experience by moving around and opportunities have come from all angles, when one door closes another one opens.

 

Whatever you decide to do you have to be happy at work, keep us posted and good luck.

For now I'm staying to network with her.  Shes only there temporarily for the summer while, I'm guessing at the very least, there is an ongoing investigation into upper management.  Currently my chef is off on vacation so I'm filling in, not a lot of time for our 1 on 1 just yet.

So I had my 1 on 1.  My current chef is leaving, tomorrow is his last day, but they've brought in someone younger with extensive fine dining experience with his red seal.  I was offered a transfer to another location still under my director's field of responsibility that I can still call in but not till the end of the month because I'm training in new people and they will be relying on me to help our new chef adapt to my kitchen.  Or option 2; stay and take up on the offer to apprentice under the new chef at a unit that I'm already familiar with.  Glad I decided to stay, I turned down a couple of offers and was unable to match schedules with another offer, while putting faith in my new management.  I actually have options now as opposed to dead ends of neglect and "I don't give a s**t about your future" attitude.  Guess I'll be at another crossroads in a month.

Staying was definitely a good move.  The new chef is a bit of a pushy bada$$ but I respect and understand him, hes really pushing for major changes and overhauls of the kitchen starting with the workers there which right now is a 50/50 split between loving him and hating his guts (something I expected upon hearing about some of his ideas for change).  My official position was cook but both my new boss and chef are envisioning more out of me; I'll be sous soon (I am already, more or less just without the title and pay).  I also noticed that despite I'm doing more hours (10-12hour straight) lately, I'm not as tired and exhausted while doing 8-10hours with breaks in previous years.  With actual direction and focus, I have the opportunity to show to those that matter what I am capable of and it has not gone unnoticed.
