Hello! Although it says that I joined in March, I've finally found the time to introduce myself! :) I just got back from Japan and I just love it there! Anyways, let me introduce myself..

My name is Joli and I'm currently a culinary student at Kapiolani Community College; I hope one day to become a pastry chef! Since I'm on my summer break, I had a brilliant idea to create a food blog, but all the names I thought of are taken.. :( Who would've though thinking of a name would be hard?

Well, I look forward getting to know the community!

Welcome back from Japan! Would I guess correctly if I said you're in Hawaii? How did you become inspired to go to culinary school? What have been your most wonderful discoveries so far?

We hope you take time to look around the entire Chef Talk site. We have wikis, cookbook reviews, photo gallery, cooking articles and much more!

Regards,

Thanks for the welcome Mezzaluna! :) Yes, you have guessed correctly that I'm from Hawaii.

To be extremely honest, I was inspired to go to culinary school because of a boy. I joined the high school food service class because there was a boy that I thought was really cute. Then one day, we had to decorate these valentine cakes and I just got interested in decorating. Then I started to get more interested in the finer pastries. Now that I think back on it, I should thank that boy. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have realized that what I really wanted was to go into culinary. :)

For me being a self-proclaimed chocoholic, the best discovery was learning how to make Chocolate Marquis. Just think of a mousse but with 3 times more chocolate and just deliciously wonderful! :) Another discovery I learned is that I can really handle stress, which I think is a good thing, especially in the Food Industry. :)

Ah, so it was a boy! But now it's the sugar. :D You know how lucky you are. The stress will have its peaks and valleys, so learning to handle that in school is a good thing. You should probably consider getting some pastry work to do during your school break, so as to get a sense of what it's like in a business setting. I've seen the professionals here recommend that to students many times.

Good luck!

Yup, a boy. I always wondered if there are other Chefs that went into the industry for someone but then found out that they love cooking/baking! :) I love reading what the professionals have to say, gives a little bit more insight than what the school provides! I would try to find some pastry work but at this moment, all my time has been trying to find an internship. It's required for graduation and right now, not a lot of places are wanting to intern.
