Hi from lovely Afghanistan........

Hello all,

 

I've been lurking a bit when I have the time. I'm an US Army Cook deployed to Southern Afghanistan. For those of you who know me I'm good and looking forward to getting back out to my remote sight where I support an 101st Airborne infantry company. I do my best to go above and beyond for these guys. This is my last deployment as the wife and smarter half said so!!eek.gif I don't blame her because I was deployed Sept2005-Sept06,Oct07-Nov08, June10-til we're done11. I'll get some picts up when I can so you all can see my "kitchen"

Thanks for introducing yourself Flattop. Our hats are off to you and the work you and your brothers and sisters in arms are doing. 

I look forward to the possibility of seeing pics of your infantry service kitchen.

 

I've always wondered about the food army cooks prepare in the field. Do you have any opportunity to try some of the local dishes? I've eaten Afghani food on numerous occasions and have found the dishes wonderful. 

 

Please tell us more about your Afghan food discoveries, if any and what you feed the brave ones.

Actually I helped train the Afghan National Army cooks on our compound how to use our equipment.  I've had the pleasure of being friends with amazing people who have been mailing me seasoning which I use to liven up the flavor of my food. Having a surplus allows me to barter for Afghan food. I like the rice and naan bread and eat it often. The beans (pinto like in flavor and color) are good and are a staple as well.  They don't do much in the way of seasoning (unless I give them some) on the meat and it's always braised to the point of falling off the bone.  Nothing to right home about but tasty still.  Every once in a whileI get enough naan to make pizzas for my soldiers. Just saute the toppings while the naan gets crispy and the sauce heats up on my griddle. Comes out great and is a favorite meal.

 

Afghan Chai is much like green tea and served very very sweet. I drink it every once in a while but I prefer my tea unsweetened

Believe it or not chef.gif I cooked a steamship round New Years day in my field oven just to do it. I had thought about breaking it down and braising it but I like to feed my guys big because they only get one hot meal (dinner) because I don't have a reefer.  I store frozens in small freezers

I have a couple of hungry Marines over there - mind sending me the GPS location so they can do a little re-con? They're a little sick of the MREs.
