Sanitation - Page 2

why the irony, chefedb?  germicides have their place - if i fall and get a nasty scrape with dirt from the street in it, i disinfect - if i get bronchitis i take an antibiotic, and hope the negatives won;t overwhelm the positives.  If i take the subway, i just wash my hands with soap, not with germicides.  There is no need.  Using more than soap would be paranoia, to my way of thinking.

I'm not a fanatic and can't afford to buy organic food all the time, and would buy it more often if i could afford it, but not all the time if it were inconvenient, and sometimes i eat junk food.    My friend who is an epidemiologist, and studies work hazards (pesticides, other chemicals, and their effects) never buys anything non organic.  Maybe she knows something I don;t know.

Yeah, i go into chlorinated pools though the chlorine and other germicides do bother me, my eyes, my nose and the smell on my hair afterwards is pretty disgusting.   I take a shower after.  and while i used to love to put my feet in the xray machine at the shoe store, i would not do it now!  But those mothers who wouldn;t let their kids xray their feet were considered really paranoid back in those days!

Re. Xray  I agree. Xray has the proven ability to change matter. Comparing to basic sanitation though, which was original topic ?

Do they have Xrays in kids' shoe stores?

They used to when i was a kid, Koukou.  That way you could see if the shoes fit the kids' feet since some were too small to be able to tell you!  I brought that up (in this thread, many posts previously) to make the point that every thing seems perfectly safe until someone discovers that it isn't.  Imagine putting xray machines in kids' shoe stores!  It was a long vertical wooden box, about a foot wide, and a hole at the bottom where you put your feet.  You could look in the window on top and see your feet, all the bones and the shoes and if they fit or not.  I loved it.  If some mother had said "hey my kid's not putting his feet in there, it might be dangerous" she'd have been taken for paranoid.  You can only prove something is unsafe, you can't prove it's safe!  You can only show that it hasn't been proven unsafe YET!

They used to have hexachlorophine soap - washed newborns with it - turned out to be dangerous.  Until then it was considered important, germs are bad, kill germs.

I'm only saying that the fear of germs is considered ok, while the fear of newly introduced chemicals is considered paranoid.  Yet germs have no multi-million dollar business behind them, poor things.  Chemicals do, and there is lots of pressure from them to use them!  I'm not paranoid about them, but if i have a choice between sterilizing a knife that cut a clean apple and taking my chances with the risk of germs on the apple, i'll take the germs.  I'll take the germs even for the 20 seconds it takes to wash it with soap.  really.  I save my fear for e-coli, tuberculosis, hepatitis, hiv, etc.
