The fascinating part, to me, was that he considered himself to be more of an expert after recovery than before. I was listening to an NPR article on Byron Janis, famous pianist with crippling arthritis in his hands. He too felt his handicap made him more sensitive and better, not worse.
You should check out his book Life, On the Line. I'm a little over halfway through and its a great read; alot quicker than I imagined. He talks about the cancer and how he regained his sense of taste. In an interview, he compared it to when an infant discovering taste, except he was old enough to realize it. It was facinating.
