I will be going on vacation and want to ship a case of beer home. I was thinking I could line the case with newspaper and put that in a bigger box lined with newspaper. The beer will be mailed home via USPS. Anyone have any ideas on how much this might cost? I will be shipping from Minnesota to North Carolina.

First off, make sure it's labeled "fragile" on every side of the package. As far as packing goes, I would think that the greatest risk of damage would be from the bottles knocking into one another, so anything you can do (including your idea of putting the case inside a bigger box) to minimize that increases your chances of success. As to cost, it would depend on which USPS shipping option you pick and the package weight. If it's a standard 24 count of 12 oz bottles, the beer weight works out to 18 lbs, then add weight of the bottles and packing, so maybe 24 lb +/-. The USPS website should have some shipping cost calculators, if I recall.
Why you're doing this when there's perfectly good Summit available here, I don't know.

Actually the whole point is to ship back some of Summit's delicious nectars back to NC where it is not available. Why won't they just ship to me??? Oh how I miss my Summit!!!!!
I will be there in April. Any idea if the Maibock will be available then? Or do they have a different spring beer? I will also be putting a couple 4 packs of Surly in my check in baggage. Maybe some Grain Belt as well for old time's sake.....
I do believe it is illegal to ship alcoholic beverages via USPS. I did ship 2 cases of Schells to a friend in North Dakota via UPS though.

Mary is correct; it's illegal to ship alcohol via the USPS. From what I've read, even FedEx and UPS can be a pain, but you could tell them it's vinegar or something.
I haven't been out lately, but I'm pretty sure the Maibock is available. There's also this: http://blogs.citypages.com/food/2011/03/summit_announce.php
