Catching my ingredients last night

A buddy gave me a call to invite me out on a shrimping trip last night. We have an area on the east coast of central florida called "Oak Hill" and the shrimp out of oak hill are called oak hill pinks. They are very sweet and mild tasting shrimp that live in the grass flats of the mosquito and indian river lagoons.


I'm planning on cooking them tonight. I haven't figured out just how yet but I love threads on here where people show things they have hunted, gathered, fished, etc. The mushroom threads are a great example. We spent about 3 hrs and got 2 gallons. On a stellar night we can limit with 5 gallons.

Me too! They also make me incredibly jealous as I've never hunted anything in my life, never fished anything in my life (well ok once I got a trout from a small artificial basin at a village fair lol.gif), and have gathered a few things here and there when I was a kid, but not much. 

 

It's got to be an incredible feeling to catch/hunt/gather your own food. I hope one day I'll get to indulge in that experience myself. Meanwhile, thanks for sharing your results!

 

BTW, I know you didn't ask for ideas, but since we're talking shrimp.... my favorite ways to eat them are: 

 

1) Poached. 

Boil some Cajun Choice Shrimp Crab Crawfish Boil in water, drop the shrimps in for a couple of minutes and stop the heat, leave them for a couple more minutes and strain. Serve with homemade lemon mayo. 

 

2) Grilled. 

Make an olive oil based marinade with lots of lemon juice, lots of crushed/minced garlic, S&P and whatever spices you feel like (paprika, cumin, curry, turmeric, chili etc...). 

Grill over hot coals for a few minutes.

Thanks French Fries! Thanks for the recipes.. I really like the poached idea.. I've done low country boil with them before, but I was thinking maybe poaching them like that to keep the shrimp flavors strong. Sounds like a really tasty poaching liquid. The other option.. as just a southern thing is cornmeal dusted and fried with cheese grits and tomato cucumber salad.


It's a good feeling to have ingredients that you provide for yourself. I think it's similar to growing a garden and having fresh veges/herbs. One thing different about that, is that when I sit down to eat these shrimp, I will recall exactly what last night was like, a balmy breeze.. moments of panic as shrimp rushed by in groups.. lazy banter with the other guys on the boat. Food when accomplished in this way becomes much more of an experience outside of the kitchen.

You should be so proud of that catch ! Thank you for sharing that picture with us. Your heart must have been bursting with joy when you saw that big catch of the day, my I wish I had of been there to see it to.

When shrimp are as fresh as that you don't need much to enjoy them. Oilve oil, salt and a grill and away you go....delicate sweetness.

 

It reminded me of the quote from the Forrest Gump movie :

 

Bubba: Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

How are you catching them exactly? You said you were seeing them rush by. Up here we catch em in pots in much deeper water. Kind of like on Deadliest Catch but with much smaller pots. Maybe call it the Tastiest Catch.

 

Here is a photo from last summer. It was quite the harvest. We caught all those black rockfish in less than an hour. As soon as the bait hit the bottom you would have a fish on. All these fish were taken about 3-4 hours running time out of Valdez, AK. The smallest halibut there is about 50lbs. We measured and estimated the biggest to be about 170lbs.

WOW! Halibut is a giant flounder.. at least that's about as close as we've got to anything like that in FL. With regards to the shrimp.. we drop lights into the water.. and use dip nets. When the shrimp are "running" they are attracted somewhat to the lights and also it makes them visible for us to net them.

They are similar to flounder for sure. The flounder we catch up here have small scales. I think they are called angle tooth flounder. Whereas halibut has a tough skin.
