Every state, county, and municapality is different. You will also need a Fed ID Number.

Regardless of where you are health dept permit required.

Absolutely!

You will probably need:

  • Business license, probably for the kitchen you will rent
  • Health department permit for the kitchen where you cook
  • ServSafe/NRFSP or equivalent "Food Safety Manager" certification (NOT just a food handler card)
  • In my experience, the EIN (Fed ID #) is only required if you have employees, it doesn't cost anything so it may be good to have.
  • Liability insurance, find a broker/company that understands food service/catering! Otherwise you'll pay way too much or have inadequate coverage.
  • and a fictitious name registration

for starters...
