Can File' powder be used with okra, as both are used for thickening gumbo??

Sure, why not?

Traditionally, it's one or the other. But I've done it before with both.

Welcome to Cheftalk, Stan.

I'm wondering what's behind your question? Certainly you can use both. But traditionally you don't. You either add okra during the cooking process, or file powder at the very end of it (actually, after the dish is bowled up, cher).

You don't want to actually cook with the file, as it will turn stringy.
