new job (again)

It's part time but hey part time is better than no time... smile.gif  but I was hired on at a mom and pop place and I start tomorrow on prep so I can learn the menu and find my way around the kitchen and then they'll train me out front.  When I say out front I mean that they have a grill etc in the foh and alot of the cooking gets done out there.  I have a second interview at a soup kitchen on Tuesday and that is also a part time position and I really want it so if I land it as well I'll be in happy land!

I was really surprised when I got the call as I thought I blew it in the interview.

Congrats, I hope it all works out for the best. You still going to work on your own thing too?

Thanks, RG.

My first day was good... I went in looking forward to a prep shift and ended up on the line and it went well.  I like it there and the staff and owners are really good people.  It's been around and in the same family since 1952 and the staff have been there forever.  The guy I worked with today has been there for ten years and they were hiring because one of their guys retired and they needed to fill his spot.  I'm the first female they have hired for the kitchen, as they've kept it very traditional but this generation of owners has no problem with females in the kitchen and males out of the floor.  They still have a linen service for towels and uniforms... but I have to wait for a bit on the uniform thing as they need to figure out what size I am so for now I'm wearing my own.   The atmosphere was such a change and a change for the good.. the owners are always on site and they pitch in and help where they're needed so when we got busy on the line one of them jumped in and cooked and helped us catch up, then they did prep and dishes and served when the servers needed help.  It was so nice to see them do that and not hold it against us like I had happen at the last new place.

I'm still going to work on my own thing and in the beginning my own thing will also be part time.  I know you don't go from starting up something to full time overnight so there's lots ahead for me to do!

Maybe it's a good idea to work a line, enjoy what your doing, go home after 8 hrs and have piece of mind. Being in charge isn't always a good thing for everyone. We stop enjoying the job we used to love, we take all our work problems home and never get away from work. This affects our relationship with our Spouse, kids and even the family dog gets a kick when he gets in the way. Remember the good old days when you went to work with a smile on your face and left work with the same smile. This business doesn't have to be all heartache, it can be fun again...................Your not a spring chicken anymore, time to take care of the old Hen..................Take care..........ChefBillyB

Well Bill it does definitely feel like it did when I enjoyed going to work.  The only thing that's predictable in this business is that it's not predictable and that's the same everywhere you go.  I don't have a problem with being in charge and taking charge, but the respect and trust from owners and/or upper management has to be there and when it isn't, the job is quite the nightmare and that was the case at the last new job.

OMG.........I read here all the time......but I never post and today I just have to response to this.  I am a dietary supervisor in an assisted living facality and this weekend I typed up my resignation letter to be presented to management on Monday.

The posts by ChefBillyB and Leeniek hit the nail on the head for me............both of them!!

Leeniek..............I, too, will soon be joining the force of "looking for work"...........just hope it doesn't turn into "Will work for food" :):)

All the best to you in your search and remember... there are no problems, only solutions in this business and you will find the fit that is best for you wherever that may be.  Right now I am working at a mom and pop part time and loving every second of it... yes it is not fancy food but I am still cooking and making food that people love.  I also am stress free and this is a new feeling for me that I am also loving.  Does that make me out to be a weak cook/chef?   Heck no.. it means I am a smart one and is doing what I am most comfortable with doing and I have the respect of my upper management and establishment owners.

Thanks!!  I see alot of work in my future... I have yet to tell them at the mom and pop about the soup kitchen but I am sure they will be fine with it... the kitchen is on call so if I get called in I will be doing dinner instead of breaky at the mom and pop and I hope they'll be flexible with me when it comes to that.
