Job Ad Red Flags

Thread Starter

Just saw this one posted and thought I'd put it up here for anyone looking for a job, but not sure what to look out for when reading ads. Even if this one weren't too far a drive for me, I'd avoid it like the plague.

Pretty sure the reason they want you to leave your ego at the door is that theirs is currently taking up all the space.

I believe they are looking for high quality, upbeat team player who can take what they have and  want and go with it. He wants someone who can get along with his present staff, whom I take it have been their a long time. He values his present staff highly and is looking for a good fit. Money seems to be no object as he does not even mention it.(on first meeting neither should anyway) He knows what he is looking for.  I have seen much stranger adds.

Comes across as pretty arogant to me, i.e.: "We have no time to answer questions".

Sh-- attracts flies, wonder what kind of applicants this ad will attract.....

"You may be expendable, however they (foh and boh) are not".

This is for an "Executive Chef" position, which in my books, is someone in charge of multiple kitchen.  I could undertand "expendable" for a line cook, or maybe even a Sous.  But someone in charge of a brigade and a kitchen that is the backbone of the establishment?

Speaks volumes, don't it?

Last time I worked for an owner with this attitude, I couldn't make a weekly schedule for my staff without him changing three times, couldn't order anything without him changing my order without telling me, (tha really screws up things doesn't it? Then again, it gives ammo to scream at the Chef too) and couldn't give commands to my staff when he was in the kitchen withut him contradicting me.  Needless to say, I was expendable, but what really pizzed him off was that I quit before he could "expend" me....

I think you are all missing the point.

"If hired you will be required to take a drug test."

Just kidding.

At least you don't have to PASS the test, just take it.

haha.

Sure, it's okay to THINK that about a line cook or sous position, but to put it in an add...?   Yes, it speaks volumes.

Sounds like the place I did brief stop as KM at...  and yeah I'd avoid it too.

Interesting thing.. I was chatting with my former sous last night and he actually said that I was set up to fail at that place.  The owners did not take the time to properly train me and no one else felt it was their place to do it.  He gave them a month's notice that he was leaving and not once did they ask him what it would take for him to stay.  Oh well.. they'll sink their own  battleship I guess...

OK ... where am I going?.. and WHY am I in this handbasket??
