My first reaction was, what could be offensive about this? And then I thought about why you are wondering, and then started to worry that maybe there is something about it that could be offensive. Problem is, just like you, I can't put my finger on it. Are we thinking of cigar store Indians or something like that? Now I'm confused, right behind you.

so, is he edible?...will the guests be chomping down on him at the fundraiser?...that could actually be fun, in a sick sort of way...i think it's great panini and with all the other characters around him it will be quite something...my only comment is that he looks more like tiger woods without his hat....since i'ts really a characature, you need to play up the ears...not dumbo sized, but bigger and more forward...can't you do that without having to redo the whole thing? hopefully you can just add to the ears...when is this? who are the other characters? democrats i hope....how low does it take to make from soup to nuts? what do you do with them afterwards? if they're edible, some sort of shelter would probably get a real kick out of it...pictures please panini!!!!.....what fun, and a good thing you are doing..if there are those that get upset, too bad...they're probably republicans anyway!!!!

Lose the dunce cap in the first pic. Otherwise, generally OK for dems I would think.

Still, seems a little weird considering the political climate these days.

No matte what you do or say, someone will get ticked.

How big are those sculptures? Scale has a huge effect on how something like that is received.

Yes, pops are going very strong! We're both working 16/day 7/week and are constantly exhausted-but you gotta make hay while the sun shines, right?

We get more requests to join farmers' markets than we can ever dream of doing at this point.

We're also crashing headlong into the limits of our production facility-church kitchen, trekking up and down stairs, limited refrigeration and frozen storage space.

But people LOVE us, we can barely get set up at the markets when we have to start selling 10  packs.

We need a influx of cash (who doesn't) to build or outfit our own, non-shared, production kitchen so we can grow. Otherwise, we're stuck at this level.

Considering the economy, we should be grateful, but it's frustrating-especially with all the calls and emails I get that say basically the same thing-"Tell me how to do exactly what you do, how much it costs, how much work is it and, BTW, give me all your hard-earned knowledge and experience for free!"

There ought to be some way of turning all that into cash, you know?

Honestly, I would be cautious and probably not do it.

I was reading a news site today, and one Congressman got accused of racism for using the phrase tar baby (from the fables) in a discussion regarding the debt ceiling negotiations involving the Pres. One pundit also faced similar accusations for telling a liberal pundit that Obama was 'your boy.'

It's cowardly, but I would avoid all possible controversy. Especially when it turns on hypersensitive matters of race and appearence.

Maybe better to do presidential seal or Obama campaign logo cake. Or a donkey figure.

one last chime...what exactly are you asking? permission? if bama man is politically correct enough? will people be offended or ticked off? you mean the same people that got offended and ticked off over 'black barbie' or cabbage patch kids? the way i see it...you are a cake maker...it is a cake...simple simple. it's a caricature for a fundraiser and to help CELEBRATE our presidents' 50th birthday...how much more patriotic can one get? it would be a sad world indeed had gepetto listened to all the naysayers and never made pinocchio, because some might be offended with the size of his nose!!...of course if you end up in the police blotter in the dallas times, i don't know you from adam!!!...salud

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. In fact, it's darn cute. 

On a more general note:  Some people are ridiculously over-sensitive, and some people are maliciously insensitive.  If you have reason to suspect you're dealing with the first, better to avoid controversy and play it safe.  It's not humoring them, it's just good business. 

As to the second:  There are people in this world who like to pretend innocence while being intentionally offensive.  You are clearly not one of them.

sorry..the 'whip-it' comment was in response to your 'holy heatwave' post..i read it twice and still went 'huh?'....but, just so you know..in just the past few days, there has been an almost imperceptable change and smell in the air..cool nights and chilly early mornings..so much so it has us thinking of needing heat soon...so chopping wood can't be far behind....feel better?
