OK, I NEED SOME HONEST FEEDBACK

We have a large 50th. birthday cake coming up for somebody you probably know.

We use and are kind of known for this little character type sitting figure. I honestly need to know if someone might

be offended by this. We did not really charge for a look alike, plus sometimes the closer you get to real the worse it looks. I'm going to try to post.

This will be sitting on a large red, white, and blue stacked. There will also be other characters sitting around the tiers.

Lentil,

You crack me up!!!

You would have been able to tell by lifting it. This head is solid.  The other would have been hollow.eek.gif

You can tell who we're doing, right? Like left4bread says, it aint rocket surgery.

I did not write that!!!!  I'm being held down and forced to write. Actually GB is to close, maybe a stones through.

Where are you hiding your site? How's biz.?

Do you think I need to change the character? seriously!

My first reaction was, what could be offensive about this? And then I thought about why you are wondering, and then started to worry that maybe there is something about it that could be offensive. Problem is, just like you, I can't put my finger on it. Are we thinking of cigar store Indians or something like that? Now I'm confused, right behind you.

John DT,

 Thanks for posting.

Our characters have been used for the last 10 yrs. We get lots of good feedback when we use them for themes. Fishing, camping, bowling etc.

They are popular and most of our regular customers are familiar with them to where they have become kinda like our mascots.

So  my concern is that there will be many people attending who are not our regulars, and most of them are prominent/wealthy people because it is

also a fundraiser for his campain.

Now on the other side, I certainly did not calculate labor into the price for portrait figures. We can't just do replacement heads, we will have to redo all the figures.

We now have 20+ figures. I'm thinking if we do Obama in portrait, we can't leave the characters. Also, if we are not spot on with Obama will some be offended.

Quick redo left us with an Al Roker looking face that has had his head squeezed in a vice.

I think I know what I have to do, but wanted some feedback without politics. I'm sorry if it seemed cryptic/

so, is he edible?...will the guests be chomping down on him at the fundraiser?...that could actually be fun, in a sick sort of way...i think it's great panini and with all the other characters around him it will be quite something...my only comment is that he looks more like tiger woods without his hat....since i'ts really a characature, you need to play up the ears...not dumbo sized, but bigger and more forward...can't you do that without having to redo the whole thing? hopefully you can just add to the ears...when is this? who are the other characters? democrats i hope....how low does it take to make from soup to nuts? what do you do with them afterwards? if they're edible, some sort of shelter would probably get a real kick out of it...pictures please panini!!!!.....what fun, and a good thing you are doing..if there are those that get upset, too bad...they're probably republicans anyway!!!!

It will be all Dems. We decided to keep those caricatures. Sophie does them. They are a light chocolate plastique with flavored fondant overlays. She does them on

large lolly pop sticks with the exposed end wrapped in cello  and stuck in the cake ledges. A party atmosphere with 350 pp, they will get eaten. If it a grooms cake, and yes, we have used then as wedding toppers and sometime the attendants, they usually get saved..It has become a little niche market. That's why you won't see any on the web site. She can do the bodies and face @ 1 every 15 min. Then she averages about 10 min. to dress each one.

She was just over at the office and she read your post. She told me to thank you Joey.  She thought it was a great suggestion. and she is going to do just that.

I will PM you some pics

thank jeff

Dress him in a Hawaiian shirt, or put a rainbow shave ice in his other hand, and you'll do fine!smiles2.gif image by kazphoto

I see why you're concerned about making what amounts to an effigy of a pol, but if it's "your thing", go for it!

Lose the dunce cap in the first pic. Otherwise, generally OK for dems I would think.

Still, seems a little weird considering the political climate these days.

No matte what you do or say, someone will get ticked.

I'll pass on the Hawaiian theme.

fnf,

How are you doing? Pops going strong?

My little Hispanic friends with their pop carts are all over. They look like pigeons.

I understand about the hat. I actually tried to put that together with scrap.

The ones Sophie makes are very thin and put together like a calla Lilly.

They are very delicate and sit much better then the DC I made.

You're right, I'm sure we will receive both positive and negative feedback.

The very reason I requested payment 7 days prior.

How big are those sculptures? Scale has a huge effect on how something like that is received.

Thanks for asking Panini

Yes, pops are going very strong! We're both working 16/day 7/week and are constantly exhausted-but you gotta make hay while the sun shines, right?

We get more requests to join farmers' markets than we can ever dream of doing at this point.

We're also crashing headlong into the limits of our production facility-church kitchen, trekking up and down stairs, limited refrigeration and frozen storage space.

But people LOVE us, we can barely get set up at the markets when we have to start selling 10  packs.

We need a influx of cash (who doesn't) to build or outfit our own, non-shared, production kitchen so we can grow. Otherwise, we're stuck at this level.

Considering the economy, we should be grateful, but it's frustrating-especially with all the calls and emails I get that say basically the same thing-"Tell me how to do exactly what you do, how much it costs, how much work is it and, BTW, give me all your hard-earned knowledge and experience for free!"

There ought to be some way of turning all that into cash, you know?

panini,

you're an 'honorable curmudgeon' so all is forgiven, but have you been sniffing the 'whip-its' in the back? on bama man, something is bugging me..i think it's the hat..it's too small for his head..maybe trade the humpty-dumptylooking hat for a ball cap...more presidential looking or something, doncha think?..maybe with a big D on the bill....

Honestly, I would be cautious and probably not do it.

I was reading a news site today, and one Congressman got accused of racism for using the phrase tar baby (from the fables) in a discussion regarding the debt ceiling negotiations involving the Pres. One pundit also faced similar accusations for telling a liberal pundit that Obama was 'your boy.'

And since you're in Dallas, there was the time that one of your county officials claimed that 'black hole' was a racial insult. http://cityhallblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/07/dallas-county-meeting-turns-ra.html

It's cowardly, but I would avoid all possible controversy. Especially when it turns on hypersensitive matters of race and appearence.

Maybe better to do presidential seal or Obama campaign logo cake. Or a donkey figure.

panini,

one last chime...what exactly are you asking? permission? if bama man is politically correct enough? will people be offended or ticked off? you mean the same people that got offended and ticked off over 'black barbie' or cabbage patch kids? the way i see it...you are a cake maker...it is a cake...simple simple. it's a caricature for a fundraiser and to help CELEBRATE our presidents' 50th birthday...how much more patriotic can one get? it would be a sad world indeed had gepetto listened to all the naysayers and never made pinocchio, because some might be offended with the size of his nose!!...of course if you end up in the police blotter in the dallas times, i don't know you from adam!!!...salud

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. In fact, it's darn cute.

On a more general note:  Some people are ridiculously over-sensitive, and some people are maliciously insensitive.  If you have reason to suspect you're dealing with the first, better to avoid controversy and play it safe.  It's not humoring them, it's just good business.

As to the second:  There are people in this world who like to pretend innocence while being intentionally offensive.  You are clearly not one of them.

I think it is amazing! Anyone would be thrilled to get that cake.

I didn't realize who the character looked like until I read the posts.

I love the cake but I would be careful about serving it with tea peace.gif

panini,

sorry..the 'whip-it' comment was in response to your 'holy heatwave' post..i read it twice and still went 'huh?'....but, just so you know..in just the past few days, there has been an almost imperceptable change and smell in the air..cool nights and chilly early mornings..so much so it has us thinking of needing heat soon...so chopping wood can't be far behind....feel better?
