Union dues and income taxes

Thread Starter

I know it's early to be thinking of income taxes but for the first time in my life I'm part of a union.  The staff at the soup kitchen whether they're front line workers who deal directly with the clients or support (kitchen) staff are part of the brewer's union and that means union dues.  Can I claim them at the end of the year on my income taxes?

OK ... where am I going?.. and WHY am I in this handbasket??

Sorry, don't know any Canadian tax law, aside from the occasional T4 that crosses my desk.

Honestly don't know.

I'm curious to see what kind of a response you'll get from the Union.....

yeah you can. on your T4 on line 212 it will say " annual union, professional, or like dues[box 44 on all T4 slips, and receipts}. anyway what a strange first response to a professional cooking forum but i've been lurking for a while and had my unfinished canadian income tax forms on the table and thought i'd  answer. alright now that i'm in i'll be talking to you all soon.
