Unfortunately, due to the financial crisis and 21% unemployment, many stunning restaurants and Michelin star restaurants had closed recently including  ...

 

To name a few ...

 

Drolma in the Hotel Majestic ... Barcelona.

El Bulli in Las Rosas ... Girona.

La Galerna de Pablo ... Madrid.

Dassa Bassa ... Madrid.

Zaranda ... Madrid.

Viru ... Madrid.

Boccadivino ... Madrid.

Per Bacco ... Madrid.

Pizzacheria ... Madrid.

 

The latest Gastro Bars to open or are in the process are ...

 

Dassa Bassa Gastro Bar ... evolutionary modern with local Madrid ingredients 

 

Gaston y Astrid Gastro Bar ... Peruvian

 

The Hotel Majestic Gastro Bar with Chef Fermi Puig who grew up in Washington D.C. at the helm.

El Bulli had planned its closing for a year.

True, however, the other 49 had closed due to the lack of finances, in other words there is 21 percent unemployment here ... and many salaries have been cut back at Multi Nationals and in Government Civil Service positions. Thus, less people are eating out and those that are able to financially are not paying 165 to 265 Euros per dinner. They are going out for lunch which runs from 8 to 10 Euros per person and tapas at Gastro Bars during the evening or the local corner bar, where wines cost 1.30 Euros per glass or a beer for same price and the tapas are Gratis.  

 

Joan Roca is one of the lucky ones as he also has a longstanding Catering Corporation. Pedro Subijana, a Hotel and Catering and Juan Mari Arzak is one of the " longest working term " Chefs with Mentoring and Coaching and Teaching gigs at the new San Sebastian Culinary Inst. and so with Andoni Luis amongst others in that region. 

 

Adria and his former kitchen staff are at the El Bulli Institute and those who chose another path, are highly skilled and working for other restaurants around the globe.

9500 restaurants closed in the US in 2011 as of 12/1.
