Kewpie Mayonnaise?

I've been reading up on Banh Mi lately and in many of the different food blogs, the authors strongly recommend Kewpie Mayonnaise over other commercial options.

 

I've seen it in the Asian grocers before and thought it a bit pricey for just mayo. But is it special? Hadn't really asked myself that question until I saw the praises for it in Banh Mi.

 

Worth having a small amount stashed away for your Banh Mi cravings maybe?

I was under the assumption the main thing that kewpie has going for it is added MSG. It gives it a subtle enhancement and is actually quite good...I've used it at a restaurant I worked in several years ago. I remember it came in a very pliable squeeze bottle and had a weird baby logo thing on it. 

 

I don't think it would make THAT much of a difference, but it certainly couldn't hurt. If I were you, I'd go ahead and buy a bottle just to try it out.

It is not that it is better, it's the constant changing of ingredients in our mayonaise dressings that the manufacturer plays with, constantly trying to make it cheaper and make them more money. Kraff is notorius for this, not only have they all cut down number of ounces in the jar, thay have cut quality.. Another note , I used to have Kraft whipped flavored cream cheeses in the morning until each time I purchased them they had more water content. Now they melt off a hot bagel or toast like butter. Its a damn shame. Progress?

 

P/S Read their label;s and take note of all the artificial thickeners that they use to thicken the water that they add and to hold the water. Least ingredient in whipped cream cheese is cream cheese. Most iused is Air and Water. Same thing in Mayo.

It gets an umami boost from dashi powder.

FOUND IT!! 

This was at the Wal-Mart in Honolulu

very different

sister-in-law had no mayo so I saw this and since I'm the only one who CLAIMS to like mayo,

I splurged, not cheap, at least not compared to Best Foods

In a pinch, slightly thin down regular mayo with a touch of rice vinegar (or the like) and add a small bit of confectioners sugar and just a tiny pinch of MSG.  It will be very close...good enough for going on Okonomiyaki.  As for the idea that it's "better" is all relative.  I prefer from-scratch mayo over anything.
