How to keep bay leaves and peppercorn from falling apart in my food???

I'm so tired of serving food and hearing about people running into a bay leave crumb or chomping down on a peppercorn. UGH. Please help. Is there like a tea bag or metal thing or something that you can put it in while its cooking and be able to remove ALL of it when done? PLEASE help. This is driving me nuts. I have googled it to death, Also it would be nice if it was inexpensive or even something I could make?? Thank you for your time.

Its called a sachet

I use the large teaball. Works great.

My mom suggested tying white thread around some gauze until I can go out and buy one. Would this work or is it a bad idea? Also, does it have to be on top? or as long as you can retrieve it, it doesnt matter where it is? Thanks.

As long as its fully immersed, it doesn't really matter.

 

 

Back in the day when I was a lowly green commis, chef put me in front of a huge vat of rice pilaf and gave me a paper with the number of bay leaves, peppercorns, and cloves he put in, and had me pick them all out and count them.

You can wrap your spices in a piece of linen or cheese cloth I believe that is called a cor garnet.  As for the peppercorns just grind them in spice grinder (dedicated coffee grinder).

Yes, your right, a bouquet garni, the larger  tea ball works perfect.

I also use coffee filters, in a pinch, just like you would use cheesecloth.

The coffee filter(s) doesnt fall apart?  What do you tie it with? my mom is supposed to be bringing me a tea ball when she comes to visit. I dont get around kitchen stores very often. :)

I was gonna suggest a tea ball, too.  Have a "collection" of them.  Have one that might not even be for tea?  It's hinged and almost as big as a soft-ball?!?  Maybe even for making MASSIVE quantities of something?  Thinking all the herbs and seed would go in and the thing would just go for a leisurely swim... to be fished out later with everything inside?

The tea ball is a great idea - but I have never had a problem with bay leaves falling apart in my food... is it common for that to happen? Maybe yo are cooking at too high a temperature for too long?
