Ailments of a working chef

Hi all

 

So I am not a qualified chef as yet, but I want to study to become a pastry chef soon.

 

So I have some concerns though, about how your body is affected by all the long hours standing on your feet, sure it leads so certain ailments down the road?

 

bad blood circulation? Muscle pains? varicose veins?

I have been doing it for 40 years now with no ailments attributable to standing on my feet for long hours. In fact, I am probably in better shape than most of my similar aged peers who have sedentary desk jobs. As for long hours on my feet, I just finished a 12 hour shift with one 10 minute break to sit down and wolf a sandwich.

Take care of your feet and joints.

watch cholesterol (if you aren't one of those adrenaline junkies)

stay away from drugs and alcohol, cliche I know. A chef at my last job got drunk and passed out in a snow bank, froze to death.

People neglect mental health, but stress and anxiety take a lot of people out of the industry prematurely.   

 

Other than that pretty standard back breaking labor precautions. Good luck.

Practice  clean living. Don't smoke or do drugs , a drink once in a while is ok don't abuse anything. When you are off relax. Oh yea I just turned  70 and still at it. Tried to stop altogether but missed it. Now only part time workiing with all young guys, keeps me young.

Hi I'm new here.  If I can give some advice: If standing for long periods of time, try to keep your knees unlocked.  If you start getting achy joints take a supplement.  I take chondroitin and glucosamine and the ache in my elbows have gone away.  I also wear crocks

whenever I work even at home.
