What would you purchase

if you had a slight disabilty involving carpal tunnel and knumb hands when doing severe repetetive motions and you had a $20.000 budget from which to purchase equipment to take out some of the hand intensive stuff that we do. My only thoughts so far are a Robot Coup and one of those boat moter wand mixers. Suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Doug...............

Well, if it were me ...

 

I'd have surgery to fix the CT problem. It's an "in by 9 ... out by 5" operation, soft working cast, everything "good as new" in 3-weeks or less. I've had it on both hands. I was only out the days of the surgery. I was working the next day both times.

Been there and yep it worked until I went back to chief cook and bottle washer and after 3 weeks they went from fixed to numb again. Maybe its an age thing cause I am 52 now.

I can't tell you about you, but I know I've never had any problems since. My left hand was around 1995, and my right around 2000. None of my work has changed. Nothing has ever come back.

I had my surgeries 2 weeks apart with a 6 week waiting period before returning to the kitchen. All was fine until I started washing dishes and pots and pans again which after 3 weeks brought back all of the symptoms. Now 2 years later they are much better but I still have some tingeling here and there and I know full blown use would bring it right back so thats why I am investigating the machine tools that would make life better! My kitchen has no robot coupe so I figure thats one route to go as well as a wand emulsifier. I do have an old hobart table top mixer but it only has the whip and paddle attatchment and I realy need a dough hook so if I can not get a replacement hook I will probably get another of those also but I am not current on all of the new gadgets out there and thus my question of what other equipment I could purchase to make life easier. Plenty of counter space by the way. Thanks, Doug.......

WOW. I was working the day after surgery. I was almost 100% the day after the stitches came out (2 weeks). I was 100% after the slices in my hands all healed (1 more week). I've never had any need to look back. There has been no diminishment of working ability. Are you sure your surgeon is any good?

Yes, definitely time to ask that question.   We of course don't know about your particular condition, but for most people surgery for carpal is an outpatient procedure with no more than a week or two of recovery time.

I had 326 stitches on 2 infected hernias at 1 time that blew out original mesh. As a result my back is out of kilter .My feet are constant pins and needles from type 2 diabetis. And my right hand is all but numb from working in coolers for many many years , other then that am fine and still work 3 days a week . It keeps me young , 

 I am 70 years old.

An electric dicer and auto slicer sound sounds very nice! My hands thank you sir for the ideas!

As far as the surgeon goes I realy had no choice as it was covered by workers comp and the guy I picked was rated one of the best in the area and was also advised to me by the primary Doc. My main problem now is that I have tendonitus in both hands were a lot of hard repetitive motion causes the to swell and then I get locking thumbs and fingers which takes quite a while for the swelling to go down. Stuff happens as you get older when you have worked hard all your life.

This was a small assisted living facility of 40 apartments of which I averaged about 140 meals a day. My budgeted hours were 90 per week including mine. I was basically chief cook and bottle washer. This area here in Oregon realy does not have a lot of stable options for chefs and the pay rate is much lower than what I recieved in Reno Nv. prior to moving here. My current job is a retirement community with 68 apartments with budgeted hours at 220 a week not including myself and our deal is I do no dishes or any repetitive hand intensive stuff. Fortunatly now I have a staff to train and get things done the right way where before it was pretty much a one horse show.

Trust me, no more pearl diving.

Well here is an update on what I submitted to the state for my needs. I submitted all of my requests from one  company called Tundra which is an on-line restaurant supply store. First one is the Globe 13" nine speed heavy duty automatic slicer which can also be operated manually. This one is at a cost of $5,300.

Next is a Robot Coup 18" Hand Held Power Mixer with a 10" wisk for $975 and of course last was the robot CoupR 301 Food Processor with a 3.5 quart stainless steel bowl for $1,350. I think this stuff should help and we will see if the state oks it. thanks for all the input, Doug
