What to do/ Where to eat in Indianapolis

Have tickets for the NHRA finals in Indy over the Labor Day weekend.

Have only been there once (about 30 years ago) and have a suspicion that there have been some changes since then, lol.

Will have a toddler with us so need some ideas for her entertainment as well as child friendly places to eat (please no chains).

What can we do or see (the do not miss places) because I am not gonna sit at the track every day, all day long!

We are coming from South Texas and our usual Labor Day weekend attire includes bathing suits and shorts.

What kind of weather should we expect to pack for?

This may not be much help.

 

I'm not in Indy but I am in the Midwest and I can tell you to expect hot and dry weather over Labor Day weekend. (Unless it --freakishly for this drought year--rains.) It's been in the 90s and up into triple digits across the entire region all summer long. Late August and early September are usually very hot here anyway. This year they will probably just be hotter.

 

I used to travel to Indy for work pretty often way back in the 90s. There's a neighborhood called Broad Ripple about 6 miles north of downtown which is where a lot of good restaurants, bars and shops are located. It's small but it's the only pedestrian-friendly part of town I ever found.

 

If you have the time and are an architecture fan, the town of Columbus, Indiana is about 40 miles south of Indy. It is a small, very pretty city with lots of architecturally significant modern buildings and great public art around the downtown. There used to be a couple of decent restaurants there as well.

 

Can't help you with kid-friendly activities.
