Buttercream, frosting, or icing?

I am baking a cake for my nephews birthays and I am trying to figure out what to use.  I made a red velvet cake for my sister and used a cream cheese frosting and it was very thin and would just gather on the cake plate and run off the cake.  I was just wondering is there a thickness difference between buttercreams, frostings, and icings?  Which one would be the best to frost/ice a little boys birthday cake, I need something thick enough to pipe with also.  Thank you for all your help!

I would just use a basic butter-cream easy to make and to pipe. Not to mention basic butter-cream is very forgiving. They hold up to temperature abuse alot better than any other icing..
