Looking for a knife as a gift?

Thread Starter

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a gift for a friend of mine and thought it best to post here given that I've read some really good posts on it, but I haven't the foggiest which way to lean towards, or what to get. I'm new to it all myself, in terms of knives etc, so I'm hoping for some input on this.

I'm not sure what I should add for all this, but here's a little information on my friend. He's left-handed, preference for a Japanese blade, likes simple things, loves cooking, and it will be his first higher end knife.

I'm in Australia, and have a budget of around 200 - 300 USD/AUD. I probably have to look at a sharpener to go with it as well, so recommendations for that would be fantastic as well.

If there is any other information I need to add, or if you think there is a thread that I should be looking at, please feel free to ask me or link me to it!

Cheers!

I'm sure someone is going to ask if he knows how to sharpen one.

I don't know enough about knives to make a suggestion .

However I was given a shun yanigaba 270mm as a gift and it still serves me well.

You might want to take a look at the Mac Professional Chefs Knife in 24cm, which an online search shows that it can be found in Australia for around $200.
