Lame duck?

te the fact I am the KM, the owner where i work insists on doing the hiring. Only problem, he tends to go with people he can get to work cheap as opposed to people who are a fit. Basicallyh 855 yea former Wall former Wall Street investors turned amateur cook who only does thw bare minimum, throws around attitude and sarcasm and has really poor ticket times. I've voiced this concern mutliple times and it was basically turned into a lecture on how I am not managing him properlyy (this is a sandwich shop by the way, I am 24). Now hes on the payroll and he'll have to really screw up in order to let him go. Do I continue communication with the owner or turn my attention to the cook?

I think your only option now is to try to train him

Don't bash what he's doing, just propose better/easier ways of doing things. "I've noticed... An easier way is....."

I'll echo Shootoo. How much has he had explained to him about how things need to be done but more importantly, why they need to be done.

Or you could do what a former supervisor did for me. Get him off  to the side of the line during a lunch period so he can watch you work. "A picture is worth a thousand words" as they say. It worked great in my case. The attitude and sarcasm may be covering up his insecurity about starting a new profession. A gentle guiding hand may do the trick if he knows you have his back.

Trust me, we're way past that stage. He claims to have run various kitchens and even was as bold to say "what you guys are doing here isn't exactly rocket science, I'll have this line down in less than a week." Flash forward to a month later, his ticket times are barely acceptable and he works extremely dirty. We're at the point of repeating corrections four, five, six times. It should be said, the owner plays a vital role in this. He constantly chastises the other manager and myself for not being hard enough on the cooks but when they screw up something I've told them about numerous times, I have to reprimand them, which results in the owner then coming down on me. I sometimes feel like the duality of his personality compromises our ability to effectively manage our employees.

Here's a perfect example. One of our cashiers no-showed in a busy Friday, jamming us up pretty bad. She makes up a b.s. story about her phone being broken ( uhhhh hello, it's 2012, there are other ways to contact your employer). Our owner let it slide and she came in the following day, half-assed the service and spent most of it on the phone which she claimed was broken the day before. At this point, I'm extremely agitated. She's screwing up the entire service so she can text her friends or whatever. I go down the line, look her in the eye and say "Please put your phone away.". She quit the next day and believe it or not, the blame got dumped on ME for being stern about the phone. I mean, seriously, in any other job she wouldn't have even been given a second chance. Like I said, I feel like the owner is preventing this place from having any real autonomy.

Yup. Time to find another job. Unless you enjoy ulcers. You aren't going to win this one.

You have the responsibility without the authority. That never works. The owner does not have your back or a clue. You can do nothing to change this situation so it's time to walk away.

Look at it this way:

youre most likely on borrowed time anyway, as sooner or later

something more serious (translation; probably costly) is going to happen,

and you're already well-established as the owner's fall guy.

Your owner obviously isnt going to change what he's too oblivious to see in himself,

so I see no logical alternative to finding something else--and judging from your posts,

seems like you deserve better than this anyway.

What Meez said - Just walk away and let it become someone else's problem , it will be an experience you can look back on and be wiser for in the long run 

My posts are different , I speak in cm , Celsius , kilo's and call stuff weird names like Glad Wrap , Bicarb , Capsicum & Gravox . Might take you a little while to get my lingo but we're basically speaking the same language
