An app for a chef?

Hello everybody!


My name is Denis, I run a restaurant, have been with the F&B industry for quite some time now, and I have a great passion for web-technology. Wait, what?


You see...


Doctors, mechanics and engineers have their special apps and software to help them on a day-to-day basis, and chefs still have to use notepads or cloud-based solutions, which are not tailored specifically for chef's needs. I think that is unfair and I would like to change that.


I have created this thread to discuss our current IT situation and do research. I am planning on developing a web-application (which means that you can use it from any connected device, unlike an app) for chefs everyday use. So far it can store your categorised recipe cards. 


So, my questions are..


  1. Would you be interested in such solution at all?
  2. Which additional features you think would be useful to you?
  3. What would be the fair price for the product subscription?
  4. What is your current professional IT combo? Any specific apps or programs? (I am not talking about restaurant gear like micros or R-keeper, etc.)


I am working alone on this app and so far I have a very basic responsive user-interface prototype, which lets me create categories, stores my food menu calculations, I can star them or mark for review. I really hope to find some support here and see if I'm not alone. 


If the day of the release ever comes, I hereby promise to provide a one year unlimited free access to every single member of this wonderful board who will support my commencement and will help me with good advice chef.gif

IMHO a cook is judged by what they put on a plate and a "Chef" is judged by how well they manage thier resources.


"Chef'"'s do need Computers for ordering, costing, inventories, forcasting, scheduling etc.  This is usually done in an office, or at least sitting on a milk-crate with a coffee and a clipboard, but not on the  line with 5 or 6 things on the go...


Cooks are judged by what they put on a plate.


Cooks might need recipies.  Fair enough.  The Chef should have them printed out and in a binder--no need for him to run back to the office to print out a copy.

1. I'm in even though I don't quite get what you are attempting. 

2. Food costing is the first thing I think of. the ability to automatically update the recipe cost when inputing new prices. 

3. I can't say what the fair price would be until the product is complete.

4. I used to use SYSCO's food costing program but none at the moment.

5. perhaps some kind of app that suggests pairings based on sour, sweet, salty, bitter, crunchy, smooth, etc.

-IMHO "App" means application for a smart-phone.


-Smart phones have 2" screens


-Most appliations that I could use utilize spreadsheets or at least 2 columns of information


-Smartphone screens are not the best medium for this information


-Once you need reading glasses, smartphones lose their appeal dramatically.
