Firstly, I am very sorry this happened to you and hope you get the medical attention and needed rest.

I believe many Chefs look at the line cook or prep cook that takes off for what ever reason as being a person who lacks the motivation and is there more for the paycheck than the job.

As a Chef I can tell the ones who WANT to be there as opposed to those who are just there to get their time in and leave.

This is by no means endemic to the restaurant industry by any means.

Your situation falls in between the lines, is very real, and hopefully you will get the support of your Chef in this matter.

Again....we take our job seriously and don't understand why others don't.

We ask:

Why are you here?

It's certainly not for the money.

You could go to work at McDonald's and make more money per hour than I'm paying you.

I could go on.....but try to understand it from our end and the big picture.

As Chefs we know that "life happens".......but we also know human nature and people management.

No disrespect to you....but......you still have a lot to learn.  Get well soon and keep us posted.
