Hello from Michigan

Hello! So I just saw this forum and I figured I should go ahead and introduce myself even though I've posted a couple of things on the forum already.... whoops

I have been working in different facets of the restaurant business for roughly 10 years, mostly serving and some bartending. I also worked in a small winery for a bit and as a TA for a high school Hospitality & Culinary Arts program. I'm also a registered instructor/proctor for the ServSafe Food Managers Test.

I am currently working towards taking the level 1 sommelier test through self-study.

For the longest time I looked at working in restaurants as a way to pay the bills, yet I kept coming back to it. Finally when I started working as a TA I started to realize that I have true passion for the culinary arts. So at this moment I have started looking at Hospitality Management Grad programs (I already have a bachelor’s degree in Theatre... THAT was a smart choice lol) as well as culinary schools in the area, specifically community college programs.

I'm not sure where all of this will lead to....

Owning a restaurant/catering business

Managing a restaurant

Becoming a Wine/Beverage Director

Teaching Hospitality & Culinary Arts

I'm just focusing on the process and keeping my eyes open for opportunity.

I have already found this forum very helpful and I look forward to learning from you and hopefully offering some knowledge of my own.

Cheers!

Welcome.

Where are you in Michigan?

I'm originally from the Detroit area but have spent time all over the state.

Schoolcraft College used to have an excellent culinary program.

Thanks for the welcome. Right now I am in Adrian MI, just north of the border. From what I understand Schoolcraft still has an excellent program, a friend of mine graduated from there and has had great success as a a chef. Schoolcraft might be a bit too intensive for me as I'm going to have to, and currently do, work a full time job as well... though truthfully I haven't really checked into it that much.

Where are you working at in Chicago? I have several friends out in the city and usually make a trip out there once a year.
