Hey Everyone! I'm Designing a Product and Would Love Your Input!!!

Hey Everyone! Zack, here. I'm a engineer living and working in Boston -- currently taking a class in product design at MassArt. I'm soliciting your help for a short research survey I made. It should be pretty painless -- only 10 questions, mostly multiple choice. In short, I would like to design a product for stove-side, temporary pot lid storage. At any rate, here's the link:

Thanks so much for your time and input! If you're interested in the results, pm me

Best,

Zack

Hey Zack, welcome to Chef Talk. My niece is in Industrial Design at Syracuse, so I know it's a tough line of study. Good luck!

However.... you posted a request for information here in the Welcome forum, but your survey is about cooking equipment. I'm going to move it to a forum we have her just for discussions of cooking equipment. It might be helpful if you'd give us some more background information about where you're going with this, or how you chose this as a project. Trust me, nobody's going to take over your project! We get too many culinary students asking us to do their homework for us as it is! (Example:"Can somebody design a recipe for me using these four ingredients?") lol.gif

We hope you'll hang around and explore the site. There's a lot to learn here whether you're a home cook, a starving student making do with a rice cooker and a toaster oven, or a boomer with a $100K glitzy super-kitchen!

Good luck,

Mezzaluna

Hi Zkonsin

i'm so glad to see designers asking cooks about cooking equipment design.  You're the second this week!  Too many things made by designers are solely for looks and are totally useless in the kitchen (I'd throw the whole line of Alessi in the garbage - way overpriced and badly designed - very popular for wedding presents here).

I'm also happy to see someone from my own school - I graduated from Mass Art in 1970 - painting - when we had only 400 students.  I went on to other things but i still get a pang of nostalgia when i smell turpentine.

And my son went to the museum school (painting) and my daughter to risd (furniture design) and she teaches design at the U of the Arts in london now.  .

I think the idea of a cover holder is a good one, but it would have to occupy little space and also to hold more than one cover.  And go to some salvation army store and buy a bunch of covers, rounded domed ones and flat ones and ones with complicated shapes that fit inside the pot they cover.  I have a couple of pot cover holders made for the inside of cupboard doors and half my covers won't fit in the slots.

Say hi to mass aht for me.

Mezzaluna, design students aren't looking for someone to do their homework for them.  The bad ones don't bother to ask, they just design things that they think LOOK good, but that actual people who use them will find useless or annoying, but the good ones actually do research asking the people who will use the object how they use it and what it is they'd like it to do and the characteristics they think would be important.

Siduri,

Thanks so much for your thoughtful response and kind words. My apologies for the tardy response -- I realize 2 weeks is an eternity in the internet age... At any rate, with your help and others, I collected a good deal of hard and soft data for my research project! I have a solid idea for what direction I would take next... If you would like to see the presentation I gave, I've included a link to the PDF version on google docs:

As of right now, I'm moving onto another research project. However, I plan on coming back to this one, and one day making a product -- or at the very least, a prototype for my portfolio.

All the Best from Mass Ahhht!
