Thinking of going to culinary school in Michigan

So after years in the industry (10 or so) focusing on FOH, I find myself really wanting to learn about culinary. There are several schools close to me.

 

Schoolcraft College

Washtenaw Community College

Oakland Community College

The Art Institute of Michigan

 

Thoughts?

Schoolcraft has a waitlist that is approaching 2 years at the moment (as of a month ago).

Washtenaw has a program, but from my brief look at it, is only a certificate program.

I have not heard anything, or know anyone that has graduated from OCC (and have lived in the Ann Arbor/Farmington Hills region for 25 years) in culinary arts.

I've worked with 2 people that went to Art Institute and they really like(d) it.  Other than that, I haven't heard any more about it.

 

What are you looking to get out of Culinary School?

I was the Teacher Assistant for a High School Hospitality & Culinary Arts Program. When the Chef (Instructor) I was working with left over the summer I applied for the position but they gave to job to someone else because I have a front of the house background as opposed to a culinary background. I would love to get back into teaching but I feel that I would be more marketable, especially as an Instructor instead of a TA, if I got that culinary background.

From my reading of this site, talking to people I know, and relative common sense, teaching takes practical experience.  My advice is to choose one of the schools on your list, go through the program, and get a job (concurrently) in the BOH.  Schoolcraft is your best choice, but the waitlist is prohibitively long.

That's kind of what I was afraid of.... It's been nice not having to work nights and weekends for the past couple of months. Oh well, what's a couple more years right?

There was a time (20 years ago) when Schoolcraft was pretty much the pinacle of CC culinary programs. IIR they had six CMC's at that time which was more than the CIA. However that was a long time ago and that program is not nearly what it used to be. Remember with any of these programs once you leave the area no one has heard of them so don't put too much stock in one program over the other.

OCC has had a solid reputation for the last several years and MCC has been gaining ground fast.

Gotcha, that makes sense as well. Now I just need to figure out how the hell I am going to pay for all of this on top of my bills ;-)
